Caldew is a mixed gender school with pupils ranging from 11-18. It is located in the Village of Dalston in Cumbria. The school educates just over a thousand pupils including sixth form, with around one hundred teaching staff, who are supported by other members of support staff. Each person at Caldew both staff and pupils make the school. The school's logo is an image of a cockerel, which is also used by the village the school is located in. the motto says 'Whilst I live, I crow' Since the Law passed about staying on at further education Caldew has seen an increasing number of students staying on at sixth form. Caldew pupils take part in many activities competing with pupils from other schools in sports like: Football, Rugby & Running. Every time pupils go back after an academic holiday something new will have been built or modernized in the school.

The school converted to academy status on 1 August 2011.

Staff

Each and every member of staff at Caldew School care for every child who attends the school. The staff are devoted to providing all the pupils with the best education possible. Staff goes as far as they can at helping them with their education. Each separate year is helped in different ways.

At the start of the 2012 it was announced that one of Caldew's most dedicated and looked up too teacher would be retiring. Mr Andy Abernethy who had been headteacher at Caldew for 15 years announced it was time for him to retire. Mr Abernethy has shared a memory with every student and member of staff he had every worked with at Caldew. The school announced that the deputy head at the time Mr C McAree would become head teacher at the start of the next academic year.

•Caldew School has received a good report from ofsted over the last year, each and every member of Caldew try to drive each other to be the best they can possibly be. Teachers support each individual and drive the students to support each other.

•Caldew School supplied the local butcher of Dalston with sausage from the pigs that were brought up and looked after by the students of Caldew that were doing Agriculture. Caldew's Cumberland sausage with a slight twist.

•Mr Andy Abernethy one of Caldew's most loved teachers hit the local newspapers along with his school around one hundred times. It came as sad news to the pupils and staff at the school that he would be retiring after 15 year of being at the school.

Results

Caldew School is one of many schools in Cumbria, over the years the GCSE grades and A Level grades have improved. The percentage of students getting C - A* at GCSE has gone up to around 80% making Caldew one of the best results in Cumbria.

Notable former pupils

Former pupils include the established poet, Jacob Polley, Story Groups Chief Executive Fred Story and William Stobart of the Stobart Group. It has recently completed its Famous Fifty of Alumni to help inspire its current students. Mary Stobart also attended Caldew in the 60's. We were in the Commercial class, with Mrs Southern as teacher. A few years after leaving I was working for the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles.
