Calian Group Ltd. is a Canadian company that was founded in 1982 as an Ottawa-based consulting firm. The company went public in 1993 and is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) under the symbol CGY (formerly CTY). Calian employs over 2,500 people with offices and projects that span Canada, U.S. and international markets.

The company's capabilities are diverse and include the provision of business and technology services to private sector and public sector organizations in health, training, engineering and IT services domains as well as the design, manufacturing and maintenance of complex systems to the communications and defence sectors.

History

Calian Group Ltd. (formerly known as Calian Technologies Ltd.[1]) was formed on September 27, 1982 [2] It has since grown from a one-person, Ottawa-based consulting firm focused on providing quality assurance consulting services to technology companies, to a $240M public and private sector professional services and engineering services provider.

The company went public in 1993 after the acquisition of SED Systems of Saskatoon.[3] and is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbols CGY[4]

Ray Basler took over the position of CEO of the company when Larry O'Brien retired from the company in Feb 2005. At that time Larry O'Brien stayed on as Chairman of the Board of Directors.[5] Larry officially retired from that position on July 12, 2012.[6]

Kevin Ford became Calian’s President and CEO upon Ray Basler's retirement on March 31, 2015.

Operations

Calian Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Calian Group Ltd. and consists of two divisions:

  • Business and Technology Services (BTS) Division
  • Systems Engineering Division (SED Systems)

Calian's corporate headquarters is located in Ottawa, Ontario.

Business of the company

Calian's services are delivered through two divisions:

Business and Technology Services (BTS) Division which is headquartered in Ottawa, with offices in Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Halifax, Oromocto, and Edmonton. The BTS Division’s capabilities include the provision of business and technology services to industry, public and government in the health, training, engineering and IT services domains.

Systems Engineering (SED) Division: Calian’s Systems Engineering Division (SED), located in Saskatoon, plans, designs and implements complex communication systems for many of the world’s space agencies and leading satellite manufacturers and operators. SED also provides contract manufacturing services for both private sector and military customers in North America.

Awards and recognition

Calian was named one of Canada’s “Top 50 Defence Companies” in 2016 by Canadian Defence Review.

In 2011, Calian was awarded an Ottawa Business Achievement Award—"2011 Company of the Year" [11]

Calian is a "continuous improvement/business excellence organization". The internal Calian management system has been recognized by the National Quality Institute (NQI) of Canada (now Excellence Canada)[12] with the gold level Canada Award of Excellence for Quality in 2006 [13] and the gold level Canada Award of Excellence in Healthy Workplace in 2009.[14]

Calian is currently pursing Gold level certification using Excellence Canada's new standard.
