History
Callaway Golf Company was founded by former Burlington Industries textile president, Ely R. Callaway, Jr. Callaway was raised in Lagrange, GA and was a graduate from Emory University. Callaway became very successful in the textile industry and was very fond of playing golf. At games, Callaway would use clubs by Hickory Sticks. The clubs were constructed of hickory-shafts with a steel core. At that time, Hickory Sticks was owned by Richard Parente and Dick De La Cruz. As Hickory Sticks started running low on funds, they sought investors to help the company and approached Callaway. At the time, he had just sold his vineyards for a $9 million profit. Then in 1982, he bought half of Hickory Sticks, the company was renamed to Callaway Hickory Stick USA. In 1984, Callaway bought the rest of the company for $400,000. In 1983, he became president and moved the company to Carlsbad, California where he sold clubs out of his Cadillac. The company eventually changed to its present name in 1988.

In 1985, the company hired Bruce Parker, as head of sales, who later became the company's Chief Merchant and through his tenure with Callaway Golf as head of sales was responsible for sales in excess of $3.0 billion. As a key member of management, Parker was involved in all major decisions during the company's growth.

In 1986, Callaway hired a billiard cue designer, Richard C. Helmstetter, as a consultant. Helmstetter later became chief club designer that same year and introduced computer-controlled manufacturing machines. With his help and the help of Glenn Schmidt, the company's master tool maker, the company developed the original Big Bertha driver using large-volume (190cc) steel clubhead. The Big Bertha driver grew to 290 cc in 1997.

In 1996, the company hired Roger Cleveland as chief club designer and in 2002, launched the Callaway Golf Forged Wedges. These wedges were constructed from carbon steel and a face with modified U grooves.

In that same year, Callaway announced the development of a new golf ball, under the leadership of Chuck Yash, the former head of Taylormade Golf. Callaway Golf spent three years developing its new golf ball and a state-of-the-art production facility. The company’s entry into the market represented a $170 million investment in the research and development of the ball, construction of the 225000 sqft production facility, and development and purchase of special manufacturing equipment. Callaway’s manufacturing facility and its equipment were designed specifically for the unique production requirements for the new ball.

Callaway Golf Ball Company engineers, recruited from Du Pont and Boeing, used aerodynamic computer programs (first used by Boeing and General Electric) to evaluate more than 300 dimple patterns and more than 1,000 variations of ball cores, boundary layers, and cover materials to create the new Rule 35 ball. Callaway engineers designed only two models of the Rule 35 ball—choosing to develop a "complete-performance" ball rather than separate balls developed for spin, control, distance, and durability. Ely Callaway explained the company’s product development objectives as follows: "We have combined all of the performance benefits into one ball so players no longer need to sacrifice control for distance, or feel, or durability. Each Rule 35 ball contains a unique synergy of distance, control, spin, feel and durability characteristics. This eliminates confusion and guesswork in trying to identify the golf ball that is right for each individual golfer."

In 1997, Odyssey Sports was acquired expanding Callaway's line of putters. This eventually led to the release of the Odyssey White Hot putter line in 2000.

Ely Callaway resigned as CEO and President in 1996 stepping aside for Donald H. Dye to take over as CEO and President, but Callaway continued to be an integral part of the company as Chairman of the Board and as President and CEO of Callaway Golf Ball Company and in a promotional role for all of Callaway's products. He later returned in 1998 to reassume his position as President and CEO of Callaway Golf Company but died of pancreatic cancer on July 5, 2001 which left the position to Ron Drapeau.

In 2003, Ron Drapeau, announced the intended purchase of Top-Flite Golf, as well as its Ben Hogan Golf division, soon after it filed for Chapter 11. Following competition from Adidas the acquisition would eventually cost Callaway Golf $169 million.

Financial
In February 1992, Callaway Golf went public on the New York Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of $250 million. By late 1997, it reached a market capitalization of over $3.0 billion.

Callaway Golf licenses its name, trademarks and service marks for golf lifestyle products including golf apparel, golf shoes, golf bags, headwear, watches, rangefinders, practice aids and travel gear. Callaway Golf also owns and manufactures products under the Odyssey putter brand, uPro, Top-Flite and Ben Hogan golf brands. One of Callaway Golf’s best-known inventions and products includes the Big Bertha Driver, the first wide-body, hollow, stainless steel wood and the golf club that launched the company to iconic status among professional and amateur golfers when it debuted in 1991. Today, Callaway Golf is the U.S. market leader either as the No. 1 or No. 2 brand in almost every equipment category and is known for its patented designs in high-tech products like the FT-iZ Driver and Fairway Woods, Diablo Edge Driver and Fairway Woods, X-Series Irons and Tour i Series Golf Balls.

The company that would become Callaway Golf was originally known as Hickory Stick USA. At age 60, late Founder Ely Callaway purchased half-ownership of the financially struggling, small wedge and putter manufacturer in 1982. Hickory Stick clubs were traditional-looking wooden clubs, but they had a hollowed wooden shaft reinforced with a steel core. Ely Callaway had enjoyed highly successful careers as a textiles executive and vintner by applying his philosophy of offering a superior product that was totally different from anything else on the market. He called the theory “Demonstrably Superior, Pleasingly Different,” or DSPD. Hickory Stick USA became Callaway Hickory Stick USA and ultimately Callaway Golf, and with technological innovations like S2H2 (Short, Straight, Hollow Hosel), Tru-Bore Technology, the 360-Degree Undercut Channel and radically different and effective clubs like the Big Bertha Driver, Callaway Golf became one of the world’s largest and best-known manufacturers of premium golf clubs and equipment. Callaway Golf and the Big Bertha Driver revolutionized the golf equipment industry and made Callaway Golf one of the best-known and most loved equipment brands in the game. On Feb. 27, 1992, Callaway Golf went public on the NYSE, trading under the symbol ELY. In 1996, Callaway Golf became the world’s largest manufacturer of golf clubs and sales reached $683.5 million. The company began plans for a golf ball manufacturing operation, and the company’s first golf ball, the Rule 35, launched in 2000. The name was a playful addition to the official Rules of Golf; the last, unofficial rule? Enjoy the Game. Competing golf manufacturers followed Callaway Golf’s lead and began making oversize drivers and similar advances in technology, and through the late 1990s and early 2000s Callaway Golf saw its market share fall to increasing competition in the golf equipment industry. Ely Callaway remained actively involved in the company and drove himself to work every day until shortly before his death at age 82; he died on July 5, 2001, just a few months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Callaway Golf continues to use the DSPD motto and philosophy in its products and operations, and retains elite status among many golf consumers, professional golfers and golf enthusiasts. As of July 2010, Callaway Golf is among the top companies in the Leisure Products Industry with the best relative performance. The Callaway Golf brand has a loyal and passionate following among golf consumers, and prominent professional golfers including Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer and Annika Sorenstam play and endorse the company’s products. Consumers “love” Callaway Golf more than any other golf brand in the U.S., according to surveys that measure the intensity of consumer passion via online communications.http://www.marketingprofs.com/charts/2010/3715/social-media-passion-index-golf-brands Callaway Golf had total revenue of $951 million in the period ending December 31, 2009.http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=ELY+Income+Statement&annual

Callaway Golf endorsement agreements are with “full exempt” touring professionals on one of the 10 global PGA Tours. The company endorsement philosophy is just that – an endorsement. Pros who make it to the Tours with Callaway Golf equipment already in their golf bag show the sincerest form of endorsement, and these are the type of professionals that Callaway Golf recognizes and targets for endorsement opportunities.

Overview

Callaway Golf Company, (NYSEELY) is a global company that designs, manufactures, markets and sells golf equipment, golf accessories and golf lifestyle-related products in more than 70 countries around the world. The American sporting goods company, based in Carlsbad, California manufactures Callaway Golf drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putters and golf balls and sells products through on- and off-course golf retailers and sporting goods retailers, through mass merchants, directly online, and through its Callaway Golf Pre-Owned and the Trade In! Trade Up! programs and services.

Callaway Golf licenses its name, trademarks and service marks for golf lifestyle products including golf apparel, golf shoes, golf bags, headwear, watches, rangefinders, practice aids and travel gear. Callaway Golf also owns and manufactures products under the Odyssey[3] putter brand, uPro, Top-Flite and Ben Hogan golf brands. One of Callaway Golf’s best-known inventions and products includes the Big Bertha Driver, the first wide-body, hollow, stainless steel wood and the golf club that launched the company to iconic status among professional and amateur golfers when it debuted in 1991. Today, Callaway Golf is the U.S. market leader [4]either as the No.

Hickory Stick USA became Callaway Hickory Stick USA and ultimately Callaway Golf,[5] and with technological innovations like S2H2 (Short, Straight, Hollow Hosel), Tru-Bore Technology, the 360-Degree Undercut Channel and radically different and effective clubs like the Big Bertha Driver, Callaway Golf became one of the world’s largest and best-known manufacturers of premium golf clubs and equipment. As of July 2010, Callaway Golf is among the top companies in the Leisure Products Industry with the best relative performance.[6] The Callaway Golf brand has a loyal and passionate following among golf consumers, and prominent professional golfers including Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer and Annika Sorenstam play and endorse the company’s products.

Callaway Professionals

Callaway Golf endorsement agreements are with “full exempt” touring professionals on one of the 10 global PGA Tours. The company endorsement philosophy is just that – an endorsement.
