Camilla Urso
Camilla Urso (Camille Urso), (1842–1902) was a French violinist.
Born at Nantes, France, Urso was the daughter of an Italian flutist (Salvador Urso) and a French singer (Émilie Gérouard). When she was six years old, despite general skepticism about her ability to master a “masculine” instrument, she began taking violin lessons. The success of her first public recital a year later convinced her parents of her talent, and the family moved to Paris, where Urso studied at the Paris Conservatory. She studied with Lambert Massart in Paris, and in 1853,[1] played in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and other American cities. She was exceedingly successful, especially in concerts with Alboni and Sontag. She returned to France after having toured Canada, and in 1866 again visited New York. Subsequently she made tours of Australia and South Africa. After 1895 she lived in New York. She is buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery.
