Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP) is a Canadian integrated forest products company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The company traces its roots to the late 1930s, when brothers-in-law John G. Prentice and L.L.G. "Poldi" Bentley and their families left their native Austria just before the outbreak of World War II. It has been passed down to John's daughter Marrietta Hurst, and her children Sherry Longstaff and Ted Longstaff. Canfor produces softwood lumber, northern softwood kraft pulp, kraft paper, plywood, and remanufactured lumber products. The majority of the company's operations are in British Columbia and Alberta; however, it owns a sawmill and timber harvesting rights in Quebec as well as numerous locations in the southern United States.
In 2004 Canfor purchased Slocan Forest Products Ltd. increasing the company's production to over 5 billion board feet (12,000,000 m³) per year. Canfor has three pulp mills located in Prince George, British Columbia. Canfor is the owner of the world's largest sawmill in Houston, British Columbia with an annual production of 600 million board feet (1,400,000 m³). Canfor also co-owns Howe Sound Pulp with Oji Paper in Port Mellon near Gibsons and has another pulp mill in Taylor, British Columbia near Fort St. John. Additionally, Canfor's sawmills in British Columbia include Houston, Plateau (near Vanderhoof), Isle Pierre, Prince George, Rustad, North Central, Polar, Clear Lake (all in or near the city of Prince George), Fort St. John, Chetwynd, Quesnel, Vavenby, Radium and Mackenzie. Sawmills outside of BC include Grande Prairie, Alberta; Sainte-Foy, Quebec; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Oriented Strand Board plants are located in Fort Nelson, British Columbia and Fort St John and a plywood plant is located in Prince George. Canfor also owns remanufacturing plants in Grande Prairie, Alberta; Edmonton, Alberta; Chilliwack, British Columbia; and Bellingham, Washington.
Canfor formerly owned the Englewood Railway on Vancouver Island, but sold it to Western Forest Products in 2006.[2]
Canfor has over 12,000 employees and is the largest producer of dimensional lumber in Canada.
