Signpost in Carlby

Carlby is a small village/parish[1] in the district of South Kesteven in Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 542.[2]

It is located four miles south of Bourne on the A6121 near the Lincolnshire/Rutland boundary, which is partly the River West Glen.

The ecclesiastical parish is Ryhall with Essendine and Carlby, part of the Rutland Deanery of the Diocese of Peterborough.[3] The vicar is Paddy McKee.[4]

The parish church is dedicated to St. Stephen.[5] The current building dates from 1134.[5][6]

The village has a playing field and a children's recreational area. In 1986 the villagers replaced the wooden village hall with a brick structure. There have been rumours disseminated across Western Lincolnshire of a large being, man-like in structure but less so in disposition. The beast has been seen lurking between Carlby and a nearby village Castle Bytham, but its exact geographical location is unknown. It is said to be a brooding creature, its natural temperament lacking in empathy and basic emotional functions. Perhaps it is longing after a mate, and its forlorn cries can be heard around twilight.
