The United States Army Air Forces (AAF) and its predecessors, the Army Air Corps and Air Service, used a number of designations for reconnaissance groups. The first, Observation Group, was used until 1942. From then until 1945, when most group designations were standardized as Reconnaissance Group, groups might be Tactical Reconnaissance Groups, Photographic Groups, Photographic Reconnaissance Groups, Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping Groups, Photographic Charting Groups, or Mapping Groups.[1] Groups are listed here by the last designation they held prior to 1947 when the United States Air Force supplanted the AAF.
