Ethnicity/nationality/country of birth[edit]

Many of the groups in this category, which is supposed to contain ethnic groups, do not constitute ethnic groups. Instead, they are nationality or country-of-birth groups. Does anyone have a suggestion for resolving this? Perhaps we could set up a new category for this type of group? Cordless Larry (talk) 23:36, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

There would be a lot of grey areas - changing the name to 'Ethnic and national groups in the United Kingdom' might be less complicated.Cop 663 (talk) 01:32, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that could be a good solution. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:18, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I've already done the same "ethnic and national groups" thing with a few template titles in other countries (though not categories). It seems like a better idea to give ourselves lots of wiggle room in the category title, rather than to try to create a new category to pin down precisely what these articles are. (In practise, "Fooians in the United Kingdom" isn't really an "ethnic group" even if "Fooians" themselves are an ethnic group --- it's more of a "diaspora group" or "expatriate group" or something else. Every academic study of these groups tends to start off with boilerplate paragraphs full of discussion about the problem of defining what group they're talking about.) cab (talk) 08:46, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I believe too much of a fuss is being created to distinguish these groups, obviously there are different ethnic groups within nationalities such as White British people, Black British people etc, however ultimately they are British and come from the UK. There are way too many ethnic subgroups in say Africa to consider creating articles for these. I agree that sometimes lumping different ethnicities together can be controversial, however it is much better to create articles such as Nigerians in the UK rather than Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo etc people in the UK due to how vague these could be. There certainly isn't enough information out there on each ethnic group to create corresponding articles, there is nothing wrong with classifying them all as Nigerian...simlply because they are. All official census data gives information about people born there and doesn't ask for specific ethnic groups. There obviously is a difference between some of these ethnic groups, but in general they can be pretty similar and it is down to the overal article to distinguish these differences. I believe the main issue here is the templates and a mix of Ethnicity/nationality/country of birth, because there is nothing wrong whatsoever with the articles as they currently stand. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the articles. I'm also not commenting on templates. My point is that this category is called "Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom" when not all of the articles in it are about ethnic groups. I'm not suggesting creating new ethnic group articles, but rather that we either create a new category or rename this one to better reflect its contents. Sorry if I'm making "too much of a fuss" but I happen to think that Wikipedia should aspire to accuracy. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:11, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok, agreed...what is your best solution? Stevvvv4444 (talk) 19:05, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I quite like the sound of cab's suggestion - Category:Ethnic and national groups in the United Kingdom. Either that or Category:Ethnic, national and immigrant groups in the United Kingdom. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I think Category:Ethnic, national and immigrant groups in the United Kingdom sounds good, it isn't too complicated whilst this way doesn't cause any argument at all as it includes any people in the UK with roots outside the nation regardless of their nation of birth also. I've now proposed the rename here. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:27, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
