This category's breakdown by band or performer

[edit]

The breakdown of this category and its country-based subcategories into band- or performer-specific categories is misguided. While a performer may be grossly sorted into a single genre category based on its main genre, not all songs by one performer are necessarily in that genre. Even if Phil Collins, for example, is considered a progressive rock musician, it doesn't follow that every one of Phil Collins' songs must be a progressive rock song. Yet having Category:Phil Collins songs as a subcategory of Category:British progressive rock songs leads to every song by Phil Collins being classified under the Category:Progressive rock songs hierarchy as though a song by Phil Collins couldn't possibly not be of that genre. Perhaps there could be a category named Category:Progressive rock songs by Phil Collins that is a subcategory of both Category:British progressive rock songs and Category:Phil Collins songs. Alternatively, Category:British progressive rock songs could be renamed Category:Songs by British progressive rock bands. But Category:Phil Collins songs itself shouldn't be a subcategory of Category:British progressive rock songs; and so forth for all other performer-specific subcategories of musical genre categories.
