Subcategorization[edit]

this category should be subdivided into styles

Yes, please use Category: Record labels by genre. If an appropriate genre category does not already exist, create it. Mirror Vax 16:41, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
As it is now, there is no access to the record labels, could that be changed please? 84.59.109.136 20:55, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
So, where would I put Apple Records?! (The label owned by The Beatles which released in just a few years rock, pop, easy listening, electronica, classical, Indian, soul and quite possibly some other genres I've forgotten). Nope, I'm not sure genre is best, but I am certainly of the opinion that this issue needs some debate and some joint effort to sort out the mess. I've done a little today (mostly moving indie labels to Category:Independent record labels and creating some subcategories for labels with multiple articles or at least one sub-category) but it's an uphill struggle. --kingboyk 21:24, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Where possible I have categorised the record labels. Either on status (independent, defunct, ...), or on country or genre. At this moment there are about 400 labels left categorised as "Category:Record labels". Maybe someone can check those labels and see if further work can be done on the categories? Thankx warpozio 11:39, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Been working on the above, and now all those 400 should be in at least a sub-cat by country and hopefully one by genre too. Lugnuts 20:47, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Sortkey update[edit]

P.S.: the seven "*" categories described below have now been filed into their own subcat, see Update subsection below.

I took the liberty to update/synch the sortkeys for three kind of subcategories. The page now gives (or gave):

  • [+] Record labels by country
  • [+] Record labels by genre
  • [+] Record labels by year of establishment
*
  • [+] EMI
  • [+] Independent record labels
  • [+] Netlabels
  • [+] Sony BMG
  • [+] Vanity record labels
  • [+] Vivendi subsidiaries
  • [+] Warner Music labels
+
  • [+] Albums by record label
  • [+] Artists by record label
  • [+] Discographies by record label
  • [+] Singles by record label

...

To document and explain the changes, the system works on this principle:

  • A top-level space-sortkey for the 3 top-level "Record labels by XYZ" categories -- this groups the main ones that are expected for each article.
  • A top-level star-sortkey for the 7 top-level categories of the Big Four, plus Vanity, Indies, and Netlabels -- this groups the ones that each article should fall into one.
  • A top-level plus-sortkey for the 4 "XYZ by record label" categories -- this groups (and sets aside) this kind of related articles.

Of course, there may be reasons to update or tweak it, but I believe it's overall more practical (and consistent) than it was before. This is also in a manner similar to the doc I made at {{Infobox record label}} about how to categorize a record label article. — Komusou talk @ 23:29, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

P.S. : also, it would be possible to:

I dunno if this is desirable yet, since the current page isn't too crowded (and a lot there is miscategorized) and the new sortkeys already perform this grouping. Maybe useful later, or if another good reason is found for doing it now? — Komusou talk @ 23:56, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Update

The seven "*" categories have been filed into now-bluelink Category:Record labels by parent. (This came after someone removed all the star-sortkeys, not realizing why they were there. The new subcat makes things clear, and in line with the three other cats.) This now gives:

  • [+] Record labels by country
  • [+] Record labels by genre
  • [+] Record labels by parent
  • [+] Record labels by year of establishment
+
  • [+] Albums by record label
  • [+] Artists by record label
  • [+] Discographies by record label
  • [+] Singles by record label

...

and inside:

[–] Record labels by parent

  • [+] EMI
  • [+] Independent record labels
  • [+] Netlabels
  • [+] Sony BMG
  • [+] Vanity record labels
  • [+] Vivendi subsidiaries
  • [+] Warner Music labels

Also, the "Vivendi subsidiaries" should really be refined into its subcat "Universal Music Group", but because dozens of Universal labels are currently misfiled into the parent cat Vivendi, it's probably better to wait for some heavy cat refining on them before the proper switch can be made...
