The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption [1] (Spanish: Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) also called Santiago de Cuba Cathedral[2][3] is the name given to a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church which is located in the Céspedes Park in the Santo Tomás street between and San Basilio and Heredia in the city of Santiago de Cuba, east part of the Caribbean island of Cuba.[4] Its facade has two marble sculptures.

At the beginning of the Spanish colonization in Cuba, was built in 1514 the first church of Santiago, dedicated to St. Catherine; was a little rudimentary chapel that was on a hill, where later the provincial prison was built. In 1522, the Church of Santiago de Cuba called Ermita de Santa Catalina was declared cathedral by Pope Adrian VI, and its headquarters established in the city. Its construction ended in 1526. It was destroyed in the earthquakes of 1678, 1766, 1852 and 1932. In 1882 receives from the Holy See the title of Minor Basilica, and since 1958 is a national monument of Cuba.
