Chetan Maini is an Indian business magnate. He is best known as the founder and advisor of Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle Co Ltd.[1] In the past, Maini was chief executive officer, chief of technology and strategy officer[2] and deputy chairman at Mahindra Reva.[3] In 2009, Business Week magazine named Maini as one of the India's "Top 50 Influential people".[4]

He built India's first electric car, the REVA,[5] and he also managed to transport it "from green street to main street". He holds over 40 patents in battery and energy management systems in electric vehicle technologies. Maini has over 20 years experience with electric vehicles during the course of which he has developed six electric, solar and hybrid-electric cars in India.[4]

Education

Maini completed his master's degree in mechanical engineering at Stanford University in 1993 after obtaining a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (BSME) at the University of Michigan in 1992.[4]

Personal life

Maini was born in Bangalore, India. He is the son of Sudarshan K Maini and Reva. His father is the founder of the Maini group of industries, manufacturer of India's first electric car, REVA.[6]

Electric vehicle REVA

Maini launched India's first electric car, Reva, in 2001, naming it after his mother. In Sanskrit it means "a new beginning". It is zero emission and noise. The running cost is 40 paisa per Km. It is driven in over 25 countries.[7]

  • Business World-NID Design Excellence award for best concept design in 2005
  • Indira super achiever award from the Indira group of institutes, Pune.[9]
  • The Monte Carlo Sustainable Mobility Award 2005 for RECC's leadership.[10]
  • Chetan was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the All India Management Association Managing India Awards 2010.[4]
  • The World Economic Forum named him one of the Young Global Leaders 2011.
  • The Economist Innovative Award for Energy and Environment at a ceremony at the Science Museum in London in 2011[2]
  • Indian Business Icon Award by CNBC TV 18 in 2011.[4]
  • Top gear Man of the Year Award by BBC Top Gear in 2014.[11]
