"Chunky" is a song by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars from his third studio album, 24K Magic (2016). The song was first unveiled during a live performance on Saturday Night Live. It was released as a radio single in Australia and served as the fourth single from 24K Magic, being issued to contemporary hit radio in Australia on November 27, 2017. The track was co-written by Mars, Philip Lawrence, Christopher Brody Brown, and James Fauntleroy. The former three, under their alias, Shampoo Press & Curl, produced the song. Musically, "Chunky" is a...Before its release, "Chunky" reached number 79 on the UK Singles Chart and 34 on the French Singles Chart in 2016 and was also certified gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Mars performed "Chunky" on television shows such as Saturday Night Live and included it on the 24K Magic World Tour (2017-2018).

Production and release

"Chunky" was co-written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Christopher Brody Brown and James Fauntleroy. The production was handled by the former three under their alias, Shampoo Press & Curl, while The Stereotypes were responsible for additional drum programming. Mars, Lawrence, Brown, Fauntleroy, and Lisenny served as the background vocalists. The recording was done and engineered by Charles Moniz with additional engineering assistance by Jacob Dennis at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. It was mixed at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach by Serban Ghenea, with John Hanes serving as mixing engineer.[1] "Chunky" was issued to contemporary hit radio on November 27, 2017, in Australia by Warner Music Australia as a single.[2][3]

Commercial performance

Upon the release of the 24K Magic album, "Chunky" charted on the lower regions of the Portuguese and UK Singles charts, peaking at 94 and 79, respectively.[6][7] It debuted at number 66 on the South Korea International Chart and at number 34 on the French Singles Chart on the date ending November 26, 2016.[8][9] Around the same time, the song failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100, however it peaked inside of the Bubbling Under Hot 100, which acts as an extension of the former chart, peaking at number 108.[10] It debuted and peaked at number 44 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.[11] "Chunky" did not enter the New Zealand Top 40 Singles Chart, but peaked at number two on the New Zealand Heatseekers Singles Chart, an extension of the former chart.[12] The song was sent to radio in Australia on the week of November 27, 2017. "Chunky" debuted at number one on the Australian Hot 100 Heatseekers and Urban Airplay on the issue date of December 11, 2017.[13] It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[14]

Live performances

"Chunky" was performed live by Mars for the first time on October 15, 2016, on Saturday Night Live.[15] He also performed the song at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2016 during the Pink Nation segment and in 2017 on the Japanese television show News Zero.[16][17] "Chunky" was the sixth song on the set list of his third worldwide tour—24K Magic World Tour (2017–18).[18]
