Coachford College, is a secondary school located in Coachford, County Cork, Ireland. Situated in the Lee Valley, 18 miles west of Cork City, the catchment area stretches from Kanturk to Bandon, and from Ballincollig to Macroom. The Principal is Mr. Patrick O'Connor, the Deputy Principal is Mr. Edward Williamson. Coachford College is part of Cork Education and Training Board (ETB)[1]
There are 600 students in the college and nearly 50 teachers. The school website contains all the information on the school including transition year, LCVP and all the subjects. Academic teams include AIB School Bank Team, Pi Quiz Team, Junior Maths Team and the Pfizer Chemistry, Junior Science, Maths and Applied Maths quiz teams, among others. Transition Year is optional although most students opt into the year group. There are a wide range of activities during transition year including an excursion to Gaeltacht, a foreign tour, adventure centre visits, robotics team and wide sampling of subjects.
Examination results in the junior and leaving cert are impressive and far higher than the national averages. Nationally, 10% of students achieve over 500 points in their leaving cert while 20% of students in Coachford College achieve this accolade. 20% of students nationally achieve over 400 points, approx 40% of Coachford College students achieve this result. There have been subject inspections recently including Music [2] and SPHE.[3] There is an annual awards ceremony in November which highlights the achievements of students from Coachford College[4]
The school was an early adopter of social media. The school has used moodle since 2007 whereby a number of teachers have notes and assignments available to students electronically.[5] Furthermore, the school uses VSWare to assist parents in accessing student attendance and examination results.[6] Facebook has been used by the school for a number of years to communicate with parents, students and alumni.[7] The facebook page contains news and photos from activities at Coachford College. The school's twitter page feeds from their facebook page.
Enrolment in Coachford College is in accordance with their admissions policy. Primary Schools in the catchment boundary area are visited each year in September with an open day in late September. Coachford College is the sole provider in the catchment boundary area and most students from primary schools in the area attend Coachford College. 114 students started in Coachford College in September 2015[8] with increasing numbers over the last number of years. Students regularly travel from Macroom, Blarney and Tower to attend school at Coachford College.
A new school has been announced for Coachford College which will accommodate 800 students. Construction is expected to being in 2018.[9][10][11][12]
There are many sports played in schools with male students having the option of playing hurling or football while female students can play camogie or ladies football. The school also has an equestrian team and is very successful in athletics.
