Most retail on this street is mainly to retailers which use smaller premises such as jewellery, shoe and mobile phone stores however there are some parts of Commercial Street where larger stores are based. The street is also home to a number of banks and building societies. Most of the buildings along this street were constructed in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The junction between Commercial Street and Briggate had some of the earliest traffic lights.
