Count Michael Mikhailovich of Torby (8 October 1898 Wiesbaden - 25 April 1959, London) is son of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia (1861-1929) and his morganatic wife Countess Sophie of Merenberg (1868-1927). The great-grandson of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia and Alexander Pushkin.
Biography
Count Mikhail Mikhailovich de Torbi was the youngest child and only son of Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich and his morganatic wife Countess Sofia Nikolaevna Merenberg. Since the Emperor Alexander III did not recognize the marriage and declared it "null and void", the couple were forced to choose England residence for themselves and their children. Mikhail educated at Eton College. He was a gifted artist, his work is distinguished by "pleasant colors and free style." Special fondness Mikhail felt for Chinese subjects and their works created mainly on rice paper in a thin Chinese-style.
Mikhail was known in England collector of Chinese porcelain, which is often portrayed on his still lifes. He served as a theater artist.
British citizenship Mikhail adopted only in 1938, when he was forty years.
Mikhail own family did not have and did not leave offspring. Lived Count de Torby house sister Zia Werner.
He died April 25, 1959.
