Creepypasta is a type of Internet phenomena and meme that typically consists of short stories collected and shared across the Internet with the intent of frightening or unnerving the reader.[1] The name is derived from the internet slang "copypasta", which refers to text that has been copied and pasted by users onto discussion boards multiple times. Creepypasta are similar to urban legends although creepypasta does not always have to take on the form of written text or spoken word. While creepypasta can take on the form of haunted images and haunted video games, it is usually written in the style of a blog post or short story.

Creepypasta comes in a variety of styles, but some are particularly common. "Haunted image" creepypasta are fictional stories that include a picture that haunt and torment the reader. "Lost episode" creepypasta are fictional stories about discarded or unused episodes of real shows, usually cartoons. Lost episodes are intended to unnerve the reader by deviating from the normative behavior of characters, centering on death, and including "hyper-realistic" images of the characters in the show. "Ritual" creepypasta are fictional procedures to invoke entities or supernatural experiences.

Notable examples of creepypasta

Jeff the Killer

Jeff the Killer is about a 13-year-old boy who is invited to a birthday party, only to be attacked by three other teenagers. During the attack, Jeff is covered in bleach and alcohol and is then set on fire. During the attack, he starts to go insane and burns off his eyelids so that he can never blink when he looks at himself in the mirror, and carves his mouth in a way that he can now only smile. He then stabs his parents to death, after his mother told his father to get his gun. He then heads to his older brother, Lui who is sleeping at the time, wakes up, only to find that his brother is to kill him as well. He is then told by his brother to "go to sleep," and he then injurers him badly before jumping out the window.[2]

The creepypasta was the inspiration of an independent game and several gaming mods.[3] The origin of the "go to sleep" meme is unknown, although 4chan and promotional material for Saw V have both been suggested as the original source.[4]

Slender Man

Slender Man is a supernatural entity in creepypasta who is usually described as a tall, faceless man in a business suit with extremely long legs and many extremely long arms. Slender Man creepypasta typically involves stories about people who are hypnotized and induced with fear by the Slender Man entity. Although its origins began on the Something Awful forums in 2009, creepypasta surrounding Slender Man has spread across the internet through hoax YouTube documentaries, video games, and eventually into the media.[5]

Smile.jpg

Smile.jpg is a creepypasta that involves a man's recounting of a haunted image that, when looked at, terrifies the victim and drives them insane. The origins of the story are unknown, but some believe it first appeared on the 4chan board /x/Paranormal in 2008. The image is described as:

"A dog-like creature (usually described as appearing similar to a Siberian husky), illuminated by the flash of the camera, sits in a dim room, the only background detail that is visible being a human hand extending from the darkness near the left side of the frame. The hand is empty, but is usually described as “beckoning.” Of course, most attention is given to the dog (or dog-creature, as some victims are more certain than others about what they claim to have seen). The muzzle of the beast is reputedly split in a wide grin, revealing two rows of very white, very straight, very sharp, very human-looking teeth."

Squidward's Suicide

In 2013, a creepypasta titled Squidward's Suicide, alleged the existence of a lost episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in which character Squidward Tentacles commits suicide.[6] The alleged episode also consists of "strange and upsetting noises in the background" and "quick flashes of dead children and gore".[6] The creepypasta became so popular that show writer Casey Alexander was forced to debunk the actuality of the alleged lost episode, stating that it was a "100% hoax".[7]

Creepypasta in the media

Creepypasta gained notability in the media after the alleged attacks inspired by Slenderman. Two 12-year-old girls allegedly stabbed their friend after discovering the Slender Man story in the Creepypasta Wiki.[8]

In October 2014, a book about the phenomenon titled "Creepypasta. Spökhistorier från internet" ("Creepypasta. Ghost Stories from the Internet") was published in Sweden, which resulted in some coverage from Swedish media.[9]
