Few people know that many celebs including [[Jermaine Jackson, Danny Bonaduci]] and [[JoJo Wright]] were among the thousands of aspiring Host candidates. Even [[Hulk Hogan]] asked Michael Nise if he could Host just one show because his daughter, [[Brooke Hogan]], was a huge fan of DANCE PARTY USA.

[[Vanessa L. Williams]], was a huge fan of DANCE PARTY USA. When she arrived for her first appearance on the show, she told Michael Nise, "Oh, I know this show. I watch it all the time." He replied, "Come on, that's nice of you to say that, but you don't have to impress me." She potined to and named all the "regulars" as only a true fan could.

[[Madonna’s]] first TV appearance was on DANCIN’ ON AIR. But it almost never happened. None of the kids wanted to stay and be a part of her performance because it was scheduled to be taped during the Christmas holidays. One of her dancers, Erica Bell, aka Tinkebell, wrote all over the station's bathroom walls with magic marker. More than upset with the then unknown Madonna and her entourage, the station’s management refused to air her appearance. After taping “Everybody,” Michael Nise said, "Our show is seen by half a million kids. If you want your performance to air, over there's the cleaning closet. You have to clean up the mess in the station’s bathroom." And she did. And the rest is Madonna history!

[[Kelly Ripa's]] first TV appearance was on DANCIN' ON AIR, not DANCE PARTY USA. The compilation tape of all her appearances on both shows, made by her mother and her, was her first audition tape used to get her role on ALL MY CHILDREN.

[[DANCIN' ON AIR - the forerunner of DANCE PARTY USA.]] DANCIN' ON AIR was created and produced from 1981-1987 by Michael Nise and his father, Frank. Initially, DANCIN' ON AIR was broadcast LIVE to 7 states. The show's creators / producers worked out of their Camden, NJ offices. The show's TV studio was located in Philadelphia.

[[DANCE PARTY USA]] – produced from 1986 to 1992 by Frank and Michael Nise -- was taped live, and then broadcast to 50 United States, all US territories and parts of Canada on the USA Network. The creative and production work for DANCE PARTY USA was done in the Nise's [[Camden, NJ]] offices while the show was actually taped at various studios located in Philadelphia as well as at various locations including Hershey Park, Great Adventure,NJ, Penn's Landing Phila., Ocean City and Wildwood, NJ, Dorney Park, Allentown, PA, Covington, W.V., Mandam S.D., plus several cities in the Midwest and southern United States. The show was never taped in Secane, PA as some articles have claimed.

From 1981 - 1992, over 800,000 kids from all over the U.S., its territories, and parts of Canada danced on DANCE PARTY USA and DANCIN' ON AIR.

Both DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA were the only TV dance programs to incorporate music from all music genres. Both programs consistently played music and featured artists from the 50's, 60's, 70-‘s 80's and 90's and included R&B, Soul, Funk, Pop, Country, Rock, Disco, TV, Movies, Rap, and Hip Hop.

In 1985, Michael Nise began the process to syndicate DANCIN' ON AIR on the west coast. He met with little success -- at first. Many TV execs of the day rejected the opportunity saying that "no one on the west coast would be remotely interested in watching kids from Philadelphia dance." This was exactly the same objections TV execs gave to Dick Clark when he brought American Bandstand to the west coast. As with American Bandstand, once again, the "experts" were proven wrong. In '86, KDOC, LA picked-up DANCIN' ON AIR, and the station doubled its ratings the 1st week. DANCIN' ON AIR was one of two shows on KDOC that pulled a ratings number.

The then fledgling USA Network heard about DANCIN' ON AIR's success on KDOC, and decided to give DANCIN' ON AIR and its producers a shot… Overnight, USA Network's ratings doubled with Dancin' USA. Shortly thereafter, the show was renamed, DANCE PARTY USA.
DANCE PARTY USA was broadcast daily to over 35 million households in all 50 states, all US territories and parts of Canada on the USA Network from 1986 to 1992. Kids from as far away as Guam wrote letters to the show. Kids from Canada as well as from every state in the nation flew to Philadelphia to appear on DANCE PARTY USA, even if it was just once.

For nearly four seasons during the 80's, [[Club MTV]] was purposely produced and poised to compete head-to-head with DANCE PARTY USA -- which was then deemed "hokey and wholesome" in press releases published by the self-proclaimed "hip and cool" MTV generation of the 80's. Club MTV never came close to equaling DANCE PARTY USA's ratings. As a result, Club MTV with all its "better than's" and with a much bigger production budget was moved to another time period, and eventually was cancelled due to a lack of viewer interest.
Both DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA jumpstarted the careers of 600+ celebs onto the Billboard charts, many who had their very 1st TV appearances on DANCIN' ON AIR or DANCE PARTY USA including Madonna, Will Smith, Duran Duran, Tom Verica, Ali Larter, Rennie Harris and Kelly Ripa. The roster of stars reads like a "Who's Who" in the entertainment industry from the 50's through the 90's.

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA were among the first "Reality Shows" before the phrase "Reality Show" was coined. Both programs were genuine "Reality Shows"... life unscripted as audiences stayed glued to their TV sets so that they could remain current with the real-life drama, accentuated by music, variety and dancing, that was DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA. Viewers couldn't get enough of the trend setting fashions, the drama and gossip surrounding their favorite hearthrobs -- the "regulars."

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA never had any cast members, and did not employ writers, actors or professional dancers. The shows' official classifications of the kids who frequently appeared on the shows are "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests." "Guest" were dancers who appeared once or twice.

"Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" are often referred to by themselves and others as "Kid Hosts," Hosts or co-hosts. This was not always the case. Not all "Regulars" were Hosts or co-hosts; and "Permanent Guests" never appeared as Hosts or co-hosts.

Just like ''American Idol'' and shows like ''Dancing With The Stars'', loyal viewers were the ones who got to pick the "regulars" and the music. Unlike American Idol and other such shows of today, the audience was never asked to cast a vote. The "regulars" and the music were selected based upon the number of fan letters received by the shows.

The real "stars" that kept the audience of millions tuning-in each day were the over 800,000 kids of all races, creeds, shapes, sizes and physical & mental disabilities who danced on DANCIN' ON AIR (from 10/12/87 to 4/30/87) and DANCE PARTY USA (from 4/12/86 to 6/27/92. Both shows often featured entire families including babies, parents and grandparents.

Kids and young adults traveled from everywhere to dance on the DANCE PARTY USA. Both shows were so wildly popular for 11 years. The Producers received over [[5,000]] to [[2,000,000]] responses daily from viewers hoping for just one "Chance To Dance"... this was years before the internet age.
From 1981 to 1992, DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA received hundreds of thousands of requests from everyday ordinary kids who longed to appear on the shows. The Producers did their best to give everyone a chance, but it was not always possible.

Kids who longed to dance on the show never had to audition for the Producers. Unlike other TV teen shows -- then and now, dancers were not chosen based upon their beauty, how skinny they were, sex appeal, their fashion sense, or even on their ability to dance. Dancers were never selected for their "coolness," "hipness," or popularity among their peers. The only criteria for being selected was based upon the ''ability of the audience to relate to the dancers''. And yet, absence the glitz, a bigger budget, and sex appeal, DANCE PARTY USA beat Club MTV in the ratings every time.

As a result, over 800,000 everyday kids enjoyed the opportunity to appear on TV and become popular personalities. Once kids appeared on the show, they were allowed to continue on the shows based upon two simple criteria: The "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" were chosen by the viewing audience, based upon the number of fan letters received each week. "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" remained with the show as long as s/he adhered to the shows' regulations and guidelines.

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA did employ more than two regular Hosts. However, the program had over 50 different hosts. Host auditions were occasionally held for a Host position that required candidates to host or co-host a show for a few days. Then the Host was selected by the audience based upon the amount of fan mail received. The Host remained with the show as long as s/he adhered to the shows' regulations and guidelines. The best remembered DANCE PARTY USA Host was Andy Gury.

• In the first 4 months, DANCIN' ON AIR went from a 1.7 on October 14, 1981 (2 days after its premiere to a 6.1 on February 17, 1982).

• In 1986, DANCIN' ON AIR tested its potential for a year on KDOC, Los Angeles, California. It worked successfully for KDOC in Los Angeles for over a year, where DANCIN' ON AIR zoomed to the top of their programming schedule from all viewer and rating indicators. KDOC received more mail and more phone calls in response to DANCIN' ON AIR than to any other program on their schedule. After the one year experiment, DANCIN' ON AIR still received letters begging to put the show in Los Angeles again. At KDOC, DANCIN' ON AIR became one of two programs on KDOC's entire schedule to draw a rating and at times was the stations' number one program, drawing a higher rating than their local prime time, exciting, controversial and wider demographically based, Wally George Show.

DANCE PARTY USA was more than "just another dance show" like American Bandstand, Soul Train or Dance Fever. It was a reality, unscripted soap opera, variety, music, theme, comedy, dance and lifestyle show that featured famous people from all walks of life including TV, radio, music, politics, the news, cartoons, sports and film... against the backdrop of everyday kids dancing while having good, clean fun!!! It was a program that parents watched with their kids. It turned the USA Network's Sales Department into order takers consistently during its 6 year run.


TRIVIA

Few people know that many celebs including Jermaine Jackson, Danny Bonaduci and JoJo Wright were among the thousands of aspiring Host candidates. Even Hulk Hogan asked Michael Nise if he could Host just one show because his daughter, Brooke Hogan, was a huge fan of DANCE PARTY USA.

Vanessa L. Williams, was a huge fan of DANCE PARTY USA. When she arrived for her first appearance on the show, she told Michael Nise, "Oh, I know this show. I watch it all the time." He replied, "Come on, that's nice of you to say that, but you don't have to impress me." She potined to and named all the "regulars" as only a true fan could.

Madonna’s first TV appearance was on DANCIN’ ON AIR. But it almost never happened. None of the kids wanted to stay and be a part of her performance because it was scheduled to be taped during the Christmas holidays. One of her dancers, Erica Bell, aka Tinkebell, wrote all over the station's bathroom walls with magic marker. More than upset with the then unknown Madonna and her entourage, the station’s management refused to air her appearance. After taping “Everybody,” Michael Nise said, "Our show is seen by half a million kids. If you want your performance to air, over there's the cleaning closet. You have to clean up the mess in the station’s bathroom." And she did. And the rest is Madonna history!

Kelly Ripa's first TV appearance was on DANCIN' ON AIR, not DANCE PARTY USA. The compilation tape of all her appearances on both shows, made by her mother and her, was her first audition tape used to get her role on ALL MY CHILDREN.

DANCE PARTY USA's ratings never declined with the departure of any of the hosts, even during a brief absence by Gury. Nor did the ratings suffer with the departure of any of the "regulars." During it's 6 year run, DANCE PARTY USA's ratings continued to increase even though the young adult demographics dwindled.' This is because the real stars of the show were not the celebrities or the Hosts, but rather it was the format and the "regulars" and dancers that kept the audience's attention.

DANCE PARTY USA is still is the longest running national cable TV teen / young adult / variety / dance show in the history of television… anywhere in the world.

In 1987, USA Network told Michael Nise that USA Network chose DANCE PARTY USA over Dick Clark's American Bandstand to air on the Network. Ratings research at the time showed that USA Network made the right decision. Research proved that audiences consistently preferred DANCE PARTY USA 10 to 3 over American Bandstand, 10 to 2 over Soul Train and 10 to 2 over Dance Fever. Ratings also showed that once most viewers tuned-in, s/he stayed tuned-in until the show's end.

DANCE PARTY USA had an official magazine entitled, FLIP Magazine. TALKIN' ON AIR was the official Radio Talk show for both DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA.

There were over 1,500 DANCE PARTY USA Fan Club chapters across the USA.

DANCIN' ON AIR still holds the record for holding the national's largest cheerleading contest.

DANCE PARTY USA was the 1st teen TV dance show to allow interracial couples to dance on TV and it was the 1st to incorporate music videos in its format (Club MTV was all music videos).

During 1986 and 1987, the same studio set was used for both DANCE PARTY USA and DANCIN' ON AIR, and both shows were taped / broadcasted live on the same days. As a result during 1986, audiences saw the same dancers and celebrities appear on both shows on the same day.

Michael Nise as Executive Producer and Producer of DANCIN' ON AIR, DANCE PARTY USA, ONE HOUSE STREET, UNDER 18 NOT ADMITTED and AMERICA AFTER DARK -- holds the world's record for producing the most number of TV dance shows in the world, in any lifetime or career, and he did it in only 12 years. This record beats that of Dick Clark and Nise accomplished this feat in 1/3 less time than any other producer or executive producer in this genre.

Frank Nise was 70 years young when DANCIN' ON AIR first broadcast. That makes Frank Nise the "oldest living teenager" at the time, and an excellent candidate to claim the honor of being, "the oldest executive producer of a young adult music TV program."

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

DANCIN' ON AIR - the forerunner of DANCE PARTY USA. DANCIN' ON AIR was created and produced from 1981-1987 by Michael Nise and his father, Frank. Initially, DANCIN' ON AIR was broadcast LIVE to 7 states. The show's creators / producers worked out of their Camden, NJ offices. The show's TV studio was located in Philadelphia.

DANCE PARTY USA – produced from 1986 to 1992 by Frank and Michael Nise -- was taped live, and then broadcast to 50 United States, all US territories and parts of Canada on the USA Network. The creative and production work for DANCE PARTY USA was done in the Nise's Camden, NJ offices while the show was actually taped at various studios located in Philadelphia as well as at various locations including Hershey Park, Great Adventure,NJ, Penn's Landing Phila., Ocean City and Wildwood, NJ, Dorney Park, Allentown, PA, Covington, W.V., Mandam S.D., plus several cities in the Midwest and southern United States. The show was never taped in Secane, PA as some articles have claimed.

From 1981 - 1992, over 800,000 kids from all over the U.S., its territories, and parts of Canada danced on DANCE PARTY USA and DANCIN' ON AIR.

Both DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA were the only TV dance programs to incorporate music from all music genres. Both programs consistently played music and featured artists from the 50's, 60's, 70-‘s 80's and 90's and included R&B, Soul, Funk, Pop, Country, Rock, Disco, TV, Movies, Rap, and Hip Hop.

In 1985, Michael Nise began the process to syndicate DANCIN' ON AIR on the west coast. He met with little success -- at first. Many TV execs of the day rejected the opportunity saying that "no one on the west coast would be remotely interested in watching kids from Philadelphia dance." This was exactly the same objections TV execs gave to Dick Clark when he brought American Bandstand to the west coast. As with American Bandstand, once again, the "experts" were proven wrong. In '86, KDOC, LA picked-up DANCIN' ON AIR, and the station doubled its ratings the 1st week. DANCIN' ON AIR was one of two shows on KDOC that pulled a ratings number.

The then fledgling USA Network heard about DANCIN' ON AIR's success on KDOC, and decided to give DANCIN' ON AIR and its producers a shot… Overnight, USA Network's ratings doubled with Dancin' USA. Shortly thereafter, the show was renamed, DANCE PARTY USA.

DANCE PARTY USA was broadcast daily to over 35 million households in all 50 states, all US territories and parts of Canada on the USA Network from 1986 to 1992. Kids from as far away as Guam wrote letters to the show. Kids from Canada as well as from every state in the nation flew to Philadelphia to appear on DANCE PARTY USA, even if it was just once.

For nearly four seasons during the 80's, Club MTV was purposely produced and poised to compete head-to-head with DANCE PARTY USA -- which was then deemed "hokey and wholesome" in press releases published by the self-proclaimed "hip and cool" MTV generation of the 80's. Club MTV never came close to equaling DANCE PARTY USA's ratings. As a result, Club MTV with all its "better than's" and with a much bigger production budget was moved to another time period, and eventually was cancelled due to a lack of viewer interest.

Both DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA jumpstarted the careers of 600+ celebs onto the Billboard charts, many who had their very 1st TV appearances on DANCIN' ON AIR or DANCE PARTY USA including Madonna, Will Smith, Duran Duran, Tom Verica, Ali Larter, Rennie Harris and Kelly Ripa. The roster of stars reads like a "Who's Who" in the entertainment industry from the 50's through the 90's.


MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CAST MEMBERS, STARS & HOSTS

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA were among the first "Reality Shows" before the phrase "Reality Show" was coined. Both programs were genuine "Reality Shows"... life unscripted as audiences stayed glued to their TV sets so that they could remain current with the real-life drama, accentuated by music, variety and dancing, that was DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA. Viewers couldn't get enough of the trend setting fashions, the drama and gossip surrounding their favorite hearthrobs -- the "regulars."

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA never had any cast members, and did not employ writers, actors or professional dancers. The shows' official classifications of the kids who frequently appeared on the shows are "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests." "Guest" were dancers who appeared once or twice.

"Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" are often referred to by themselves and others as "Kid Hosts," Hosts or co-hosts. This was not always the case. Not all "Regulars" were Hosts or co-hosts; and "Permanent Guests" never appeared as Hosts or co-hosts.

Just like American Idol and shows like Dancing With The Stars, loyal viewers were the ones who got to pick the "regulars" and the music. Unlike American Idol and other such shows of today, the audience was never asked to cast a vote. The "regulars" and the music were selected based upon the number of fan letters received by the shows.

The real "stars" that kept the audience of millions tuning-in each day were the over 800,000 kids of all races, creeds, shapes, sizes and physical & mental disabilities who danced on DANCIN' ON AIR (from 10/12/87 to 4/30/87) and DANCE PARTY USA (from 4/12/86 to 6/27/92. Both shows often featured entire families including babies, parents and grandparents.

Kids and young adults traveled from everywhere to dance on the DANCE PARTY USA. Both shows were so wildly popular for 11 years. The Producers received over 5,000 to 2,000,000 responses daily from viewers hoping for just one "Chance To Dance"... this was years before the internet age.

From 1981 to 1992, DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA received hundreds of thousands of requests from everyday ordinary kids who longed to appear on the shows. The Producers did their best to give everyone a chance, but it was not always possible.

Kids who longed to dance on the show never had to audition for the Producers. Unlike other TV teen shows -- then and now, dancers were not chosen based upon their beauty, how skinny they were, sex appeal, their fashion sense, or even on their ability to dance. Dancers were never selected for their "coolness," "hipness," or popularity among their peers. The only criteria for being selected was based upon the ability of the audience to relate to the dancers. And yet, absence the glitz, a bigger budget, and sex appeal, DANCE PARTY USA beat Club MTV in the ratings every time.

As a result, over 800,000 everyday kids enjoyed the opportunity to appear on TV and become popular personalities. Once kids appeared on the show, they were allowed to continue on the shows based upon two simple criteria: The "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" were chosen by the viewing audience, based upon the number of fan letters received each week. "Regulars" and "Permanent Guests" remained with the show as long as s/he adhered to the shows' regulations and guidelines.

DANCIN' ON AIR and DANCE PARTY USA did employ more than two regular Hosts. However, the program had over 50 different hosts. Host auditions were occasionally held for a Host position that required candidates to host or co-host a show for a few days. Then the Host was selected by the audience based upon the amount of fan mail received. The Host remained with the show as long as s/he adhered to the shows' regulations and guidelines. The best remembered DANCE PARTY USA Host was Andy Gury.


LITTLE KNOWN FACTS & RESEARCH DATA

• In the first 4 months, DANCIN' ON AIR went from a 1.7 on October 14, 1981 (2 days after its premiere to a 6.1 on February 17, 1982).

• Including prime time, DANCIN' ON AIR was WPHL's sixth top rated program -- amazing, when the show had an exclusive, and an elusive, target audience.

• In November, 1986, DANCIN' ON AIR achieved the following an 8 rating in women 12-24 a 5 rating in persons 14-24, Ratings twice as high as any other station in women, 12-24 a teen (over 6 years) rating average of 10 against Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Charlie's Angels, Magnum and Oprah. Received 1,000,000 written votes in a national cheerleading contest; probably a record for a regional television program.

• DANCIN' ON AIR maintained a 3-5 rating average over 6 years. " ... Mike (Nise) has displayed the professional acumen so vital to achieving success in this industry. • In 1986, DANCIN' ON AIR tested its potential for a year on KDOC, Los Angeles, California. It worked successfully for KDOC in Los Angeles for over a year, where DANCIN' ON AIR zoomed to the top of their programming schedule from all viewer and rating indicators. KDOC received more mail and more phone calls in response to DANCIN' ON AIR than to any other program on their schedule. After the one year experiment, DANCIN' ON AIR still received letters begging to put the show in Los Angeles again. At KDOC, DANCIN' ON AIR became one of two programs on KDOC's entire schedule to draw a rating and at times was the stations' number one program, drawing a higher rating than their local prime time, exciting, controversial and wider demographically based, Wally George Show.

• In a survey taken in the Los Angeles market, kids preferred DANCIN' ON AIR over a local production by an amazing 98 percent! In addition, six months later, the LA Times printed a query representing many others expressing the writer's concern about DANCIN' ON AIR's possible return.

• DANCE PARTY USA was USA Network's Sales Department dream for six years and was USA's most cost-efficient show; it holds the record for the number of first run programs by the USA Network. In prime time, it scored a "1.6" rating for the quarter and averaged a "1" cable rating.

• In the 5:00 to 6:00 pm time frame, MTV's ratings remained constant while DANCE PARTY USA's grew within the hour by almost 25% against a similar show named Club MTV.

• In 1991, while Club MTV was drastically cut back, DANCE PARTY USA was still going strong. The following is an excerpt of an article that appeared in the January 18, 1991, issue of "The Hollywood Reporter": "Club MTV Falters. MTV has scaled back the show "Club MTV." The dance program has been taken off the daily schedule and will now air weekly on Saturday evenings..."

• DANCE PARTY USA (Monday through Friday) received a "1" cable rating which at that time equated to 402,000 households, making it, at that time, the "highest delivering" of any teen dance show on the air.

• DANCIN' ON AIR, and its sister show, DANCE PARTY USA, became the longest running daily dance shows in the nation, a close second only to American Bandstand. Due to the cancellation after 35 years of American Bandstand, DANCE PARTY USA became the "heir apparent" to the daily, dance music program.
