Danish is a Persian word which literally translates to "knowledge", "science" and "wisdom". It is a popular Muslim name in the Indian subcontinent. In the Sanskrit language, Dan is "to give", and Ish is "God", a Hindu name. "Dan+ish" is "God who gives" (cf. Theodore in Greek, Godiva in Old English, and Nathaniel in Hebrew).
