David Adam Stockdale (born 20 September 1985) is an English footballer who plays for Fulham as a goalkeeper. He has made over 75 league and cup appearances in the Conference National and League Two with York City and Darlington.[3] He has also been called up to the England squad by Fabio Capello but currently remains uncapped.[4]

Club career

York City

Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, After playing for Huddersfield Town as a youngster, Stockdale was developed through the York City youth system and made his Football League debut when coming on as a substitute on the last day of the 2002–03 season. He stated his determination at earning a new contract with York in January 2005,[5] but turned down a contract offer in June.[6] Stockdale had loan spells at Wakefield & Emley and Worksop Town during the 2005–06 season,[7][8] and was released by York City at the end of that season, after being publicly criticised by manager Billy McEwan about his weight.[9]

Darlington

Stockdale joined Darlington in August 2006 after impressing in a period on trial in pre-season.[9] He made eight appearances in the 2006–07 season[10] and when first-choice goalkeeper, Andy Oakes, was sent off in the opening game of the 2007–08 season, Stockdale took over and became manager Dave Penney's preferred choice in goal.[11] Stockdale was rewarded with a new contract in November 2007[12] and went on to make over 40 appearances for Darlington in the 2007–08 season.[13]

Fulham

In April 2008, he was linked with Birmingham City and Newcastle United,[14] but Darlington later accepted a bid, reported to be £350,000 rising to £600,000, from Fulham.[15][16] Despite this, he played for Darlington in the play-offs, where they eventually lost on penalties 5–4 after the matches had ended 3–3 on aggregate.[17] He completed his move to Premier League side Fulham on 4 June 2008, on a two-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.[18] He returned to League Two after joining Rotherham United on a month's loan on 21 November.[19] He made his debut a day later in a 2–0 defeat to Bradford City,[20] and in his next game, a 1–1 draw away at Exeter City, Stockdale saved a Ben Watson penalty and made a late save from a Ryan Harley header.[21] The loan deal was extended for a further month until 17 January.[22]

On 2 March 2009, Stockdale joined League One team Leicester City on a month's loan as cover for first choice keepers David Martin and Paul Henderson after previous loanee Mark Bunn was recalled by parent club Blackburn Rovers due to an injury to Paul Robinson.[23] He made his debut in Leicester's 1–1 League One draw with Stockport County.[24] He later picked up a shoulder injury, which led to Leicester signing Tony Warner on loan.[25] Stockdale extended his loan at Leicester until the end of the 2008–09 season on 6 April.[26] He played for Leicester as their promotion to the Championship was confirmed after a 2–0 victory over Southend United,[27] after which he said he would be interested in joining the club for the following season.[28] Stockdale made his debut for Fulham on 13 September 2009, playing in a 2–1 victory against Everton at home.[29]

On 29 December 2009, Stockdale signed an extension to his contract, which will keep him at Fulham until the summer of 2013.[30] On 22 January 2010, he joined The Championship side Plymouth Argyle on loan for a month until 18 February, after impressing in a behind closed doors friendly between the two clubs.[31] After returning to Fulham, With Stockdale the number 2 goalie for the Europa League run, he suffered an injury and was ruled out of the match against FC Basel.[32] In May 2010 Fulham reached the UEFA Europa League Final, with Mark Schwarzer firmly first choice, Stockdale missed out on a place on the bench with Pascal Zuberbühler the preffered choice on the bench after a battle to be substitute goalie. Fulham lost the game in extra time 2-1 after goals from Diego Forlan.[33]

After maanager Roy Hodgson left to join Liverpool, he was replaced by Mark Hughes. Schwarzer handed in a transfer request to the club after interest from Arsenal.[34]Due to Mark Schwarzer being injured in pre-season, Stockdale was the first choice goalkeeper at Fulham FC. He made a fine start to the season, keeping a clean sheet at Bolton. He followed this up with a penalty stop at Craven Cottage against Manchester United, a game in which he was lauded by critics. A call up to the England team was in question, but Stockdale got injured and hope of that ended. He continued his run in the team in January due to Schwarzer's participation in Asian Cup, starting with West Brom where he kept a clean sheet. He followed this up with fine performances against Stoke, Wigan and Liverpool. He is expected to be called into the England squad for the next game after his performances.[35] In total Stockdale played 10 games under manager Mark Hughes during the 2010/11 season with 7 of them coming in the Premier League.[36]

In June 2011, new Fulham manager Martin Jol revealed he would like to loan Stockdale out to get a regular run of games, but had no intention of selling Stockdale as he is a bright prospect for Fulham's future.[37][38] Stockdale started the 2011–12 season on the bench against NSI Runavik in the Europa League qualifier on 30 June, with Mark Schwarzer again the prefered first choice goalkeeper.[39] With Fulham signing Hungarian goalkeeper Csaba Somogyi to help facilitate a loan move, Stockdale revealed after interest from Swansea City that he would be willing to join the club and also was willing to drop down to the Championship in order to get regular football with Leeds United also interested in signing the player.[40][41]
