David Zayas (born August 15, 1962) is a Puerto Rican actor. He is most known for his roles as Angel Batista on Showtime's series Dexter and as Enrique Morales on the HBO prison drama series Oz.
Early life
Zayas was born in Puerto Rico. He was raised in the Bronx borough of New York City.[1]
Career
After serving in the United States Air Force, he joined the New York City Police Department. His career as a police officer allowed him to develop as a character actor, leading to a series of acting jobs on television and film mainly playing law enforcement officers.[2] His experience in law enforcement also provided Zayas with the insight to convincingly play characters on the other side of the law, like Enrique Morales on HBO's long-running prison-drama Oz. He appears in 27 episodes, from 2000–2003, as one of the most ruthless inmates featured in the series.[3] Zayas has been a regular cast member of Dexter since its beginning in 2006.[4]
Zayas has been a member of the LAByrinth Theater Company since 1992,[5] a New York City-based traveling actors group. He branched out into television and film projects, and has diversified with guest roles in such popular television series such as New York Undercover, Person of Interest, and NYPD Blue.[3] At LAByrinth, he met his future wife, actress Liza Colón-Zayas.
Zayas is featured in the 2010 independent film Shadowboxing, which appeared on the film festival circuit. He appears in Sylvester Stallone's feature film The Expendables and The Brothers Strause's film Skyline.[3] He plays an NYPD officer in the 2007 feature film Michael Clayton.[3]
Zayas also appeared in Bruce Willis film (2006) 16 Blocks as a corrupt police officer
Zayas appears in an episode of Fox's latest thriller The Following, playing the part of Tyson, Ryan Hardy's (retired) FBI best friend.[6]
Personal life
Zayas and his wife, actress Liza Colón-Zayas, reside in Los Angeles.
