Eunectes deschauenseei is a nonvenomous boa species endemic to northeastern South America. No subspecies are currently recognized.[4]

Toxonomy[edit]

The specific name, deschauenseei, is in honor of American ornithologist Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee,[5] who donated a specimen to the Philadelphia Zoo in 1924. The type locality given is "probably collected on the island of Marajo at the mouth of the Amazon".[1]

When this snake, commonly known as the "dark-spotted anaconda", was first found, it was given to the Philadelphia Zoo.[citation needed]

Distribution and habitat[edit]

E. deschauenseei is found in South America in northeastern Brazil, Guyana and coastal French Guiana. E. deschauenseei is both semi-aquatic and terrestrial. It is usually found in swampy, seasonally flooded freshwater areas.

Reproduction[edit]

Mating probably takes place at the end of the dry season, around June to August. They can have between three and 26 neonates in a litter, with sizes ranging between 32 and 60 cm (13 and 24 in).

Pizzatto and Marques (2007) examined 5 gravid females and found the litter size ranged from 3 to 27 (x=10.6) and examined the embryos, they estimate that the young are about 0.49 m (19 in) at birth.
