Den ständiga resan (Template:Lang-en) is the fourth studio album by Swedish singer-songwriter Marie Fredriksson, released on 9 October 1992 by EMI Sweden. Two singles were released from the album: "Så länge det lyser mittemot" ("As Long as There Is Light on the Other Side") and "Mellan sommar och höst" ("Between Summer and Autumn"). It was a commercial success upon release in her native Sweden, spending two weeks atop the Swedish Albums Chart,[1] and was certified platinum by the Swedish Recording Industry Association for shipments in excess of 100,000 copies.[2]

The album was reissued on CD on 5 March 2003 with four bonus tracks, three of these were covers taken from the 1988 tribute album to Cornelis Vreeswijk, Den flygande holländaren, who had died the previous year. Also included was her 1989 Swedish top 10 hit "Sparvöga".[3] The album's title track was later covered by Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth and was featured on a special edition re-release of their 2008 album Watershed.[4]

Background and recording

Fredriksson first recorded material as a member of Swedish power pop band MaMa's Barn, who released their only album, Barn Som Barn (Children as Children), in 1982.[5] This band consisted of keyboardist Fredriksson sharing vocal duties with her then-boyfriend, guitarist Martin Sternhufvud, as well as Anders Herrlin and Micke Andersson from Gyllene Tider on bass and drums, respectively.[6] The group disbanded the following year, with Fredriksson going on to record three solo albums – Het vind (1984), Den sjunde vågen (1986) and Efter stormen (1987) – with Gyllene Tider producer Lasse Lindbom.[7]

Over the following years, Roxette – a pop duo formed by Fredriksson alongside Gyllene Tider vocalist Per Gessle – experienced an international breakthrough with the release of multi-platinum albums such as Look Sharp! (1988) and Joyride (1991), and had a string of worldwide hit singles, including "The Look", "Listen to Your Heart", "Dangerous", "It Must Have Been Love", "Joyride" and "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)". In contrast to the work of Roxette and Fredriksson's previous solo material, Den ständiga resan is largely bereft of guitars and synthesizers. Recorded with Gyllene Tider and MaMa's Barn bassist Anders Herrlin, the album is instead composed of more tranquil material, and features arrangements and instrumentation inspired by a wide range of genres, including blues rock, jazz pop and new-age music.[8]
