Derbentsky District (Russian: Дербентский райо́н) is an administrative[1] and municipal[5] district (raion), one of the forty-one in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. It is located in the southeast of the republic. The area of the district is 822.72 square kilometers (317.65 sq mi).[2] Its administrative center is the city of Derbent (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 99,054 (2010 Census);[3] 86,494 (2002 Census);[7] 63,575 (1989 Soviet census).[8]
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Derbentsky District is one of the forty-one in the republic.[1] The city of Derbent serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1]
As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Derbentsky Municipal District.[5] The City of Derbent is incorporated separately from the district as Derbent Urban Okrug.[5]
Demographics
Ethnically, the population is mainly Azerbaijani.[9]
