Radiant Residents is a multiplayer survival horror video game based on the Indie-Horror game 60 Seconds! developed by Roblox game creator UmmmOkayWhat on the gaming and game developing platform Roblox on 23 September 2023. The game is about a Nuclear Invasion in the United States from Extraterrestrial Aliens, and being forced to stay in a Nuclear Bunker while Aliens and other weird creatures roam the world. The player has 60 seconds to gather as much supplies as they can before a Nuclear bomb drops on the house. After the 60-second rush, the player must survive inside a bunker for many days, while random events occur inside and outside of the bunker. As of 2024, the game has received 62 Million visits, and has 74 thousand likes. It is one of the most popular Survival Horror games on Roblox today.

Gameplay[edit]

Radiant Residents starts in a lobby with various game-themed decorations[1], and a leader board of how many days various players have survived. Once in, the player can create a lobby of their own, or join someone else's. You can choose between different themes for your Bunker, which you can purchase with Sanity Points[2], or with Robux. Up to 5 people can join a lobby, and the option to kick people does exist. Options in a game are to have a voting board, which makes all players have to vote to use items. If the voting board is off, players can use items freely. There is also an option to have only players with a specific amount of days or higher that they have survived in the game to join the lobby. A player can also make their lobby exclusive to just people they have friended on Roblox by turning on Friends Only.

When the player has the desired amount of players in their lobby, they can press Start Game, and they will be sent to a green screen that says "Teleporting…" and they will be taken into a new server. After the initial cutscene, the player has to get up off of their couch, and gather as much supplies as possible to place in their bunker.

Common Priority Items that you can get in the house at the beginning and during outside expedition include[3]: Canned Food; Water; Soap; Medkits; Bug Sprays; Duct Tape; and Rat Traps[4]. More Important items that you can get from the house but can more rarely find on expeditions include: A Radio; Toolboxes; and Batteries. Important Items you can only get in the house and not during expeditions include[5]: A Gasmask; a Blueprint; a Baseball Bat; an Axe; a Map of Town, which allows you to choose where you go on expeditions, without it, it’s randomized; a Backpack; Flashlights; and Toys, which can be used to play a mini-game, or be given to an NPC known as the Baby Alien, or the Trading Alien. After the 60 seconds are finished, the door to the vault closes, and whoever does not make it into the vault door dies. After, the surviving players will be sent to the bunker, where they are given basic instructions on how to play the game.

The player can stay in the vault, or they can go on expeditions to gather materials. However, there are monsters out in the expedition locations. There are __ expedition locations: the Hospital[6], where 1 single monster roams that attacks if you move; the Neighborhood, where more rare items can be found, like batteries or toolboxes, and a code can be found to put in the Radiant Residents Sanity Points shop[7]; the Grocery Store, where most essential items can be obtained, but in infested with monsters and raiders; the SOS Location; which is unlocked after breaking the SOS code on the Radio; and the Radio Interference Location; which is unlocked when the radio signal get interfered. During the Christmas Update, there were 2 new Expedition locations: the North Pole, where you could get Christmas presents as part of the update, but it was very difficult; and Santa’s Fallen Sleigh; which was a very small expedition location where you could get more presents.[8]

Throughout the game, random events will occur inside the bunker[9]. A Variety of enemies will break into the bunker and try to kill you[10]. Another type of enemy are the vent enemies[11], which are enemies that can appear in all 3 vents in the bunker, which include: Spiders, which can be kept away by using Bug Spray, or by closing the vents until they go away, if they aren’t taken care of, they will come into your bunker in large amounts and try to attack the player; Rats, which can be kept away by using Rat Traps or by closing the vents until they go away, they will also come in large amounts and try to attack the player if they aren’t kept away; the Vent Lady (also known as the Moody Teenager), who can only be kept away by closing the vents until she leaves, and if she gets in, she’ll jump scare the player, and take away a chunk of their health, and lots of their supplies; and the Camera Bug, which can be kept away by using Bug Spray, or by closing the vents until it leaves. The Camera Bug is different from the rest of the vent enemies, because instead of the loud vent thumping sound, when it walks, it will make a camera shutter sound. If it gets in, another enemy will be summoned, known as The Fumigator.

The Fumigator is a dangerous enemy, and is recommended to be attacked with long-ranged weapons. He does massive amounts of damage, and if the player gets too close to him, he will knock them over.

There are also various devices that can help you in the game. One is the Radio, which can broadcast events such as an SOS from an unknown location, or The Game Show, which has a host who spins a game show wheel, which can have a benefit or a negative effect depending on what the wheel lands on. Another device is the Computer, which you can check emails on; check the security camera of the house; or buy stuff with Robux[12]. However, the computer can get infected by a virus, which if it does, the player has to pay essential items to clean the computer. Another thing the computer can do is you can get emails from random NPCs, who will trade you powerful weapons for your essential resources, or they can give you other benefits, although these require you to trade more valuable items. There is a glitch that the Computer can have, that only occurs when playing on XBox[13], where you can't check your emails.

Some NPCs can appear throughout the game, like Beans the Dog, who will randomly appear by the canned food; or The Homeless Dude, who will appear when he sends a message through the Radio. He can become infected by a Fungus disease, and attack the player, or he can become the player's bodyguard and protect them from attacks in the vault.

Another NPC is the Traveling Merchant, also known as Mr. Rattles[14], who sells Teas that can heal and refresh the player.

If the player dies while other players are alive, they will make a scream that is not the traditional Roblox scream, and a black screen will appear that say You Died, where the player can buy a revive, which costs 40 Robux. If all players are dead, a screen will appear that says All Players are dead. Hopefully one will buy a revive. If the player does not have enough Robux to respawn, or all players die, the round is over, and your progress does not get saved.

History[edit]

UmmmOkayWhat, under his YouTube Channel Gloez, released the first Radiant Residents trailer, which was a Teaser trailer. The experience was created on July 4th, 2023, and publicly released as Radiant Residents on 23 September 2023. The game slowly started to gain popularity, but had a massive player boom in October of 2023, when various popular YouTubers made Let's-Play videos of the game, such as Rogurt[15]; Bloom[16]; AquaticMarble[17]; and Sketch[18]. In November of 2023, the game was given a Christmas update, with 2 new expedition locations, and new updates like Christmas Presents, and a new Christmas Lobby.

The Christmas update lasted until 11 February, 2024, and also had new game modes added: Including Hard Mode, which makes the game harder, but increases the amount of Sanity Points a player can get during a run; and Roulette Mode, which make 3 cards appear at random times, and the players have to guess which one brings a good or bad outcome. The game was renamed [GAMEMODES] Radiant Residents until 3 weeks later when it was changed back to Radiant Residents.

Plot[edit]

The game starts out with a cutscene of the characters watching a Wild-West Movie, until it gets cut off by an Emergency Alert System alert that says 15 nuclear bombs have been detonated on various cities of the United States. After the EAS plays, the player gets up and has 60 seconds to gather resources.

The game can go on for an infinite amount of days, although the game still has endings.

Into The Future:[19]

The first ending of the game. From Day 5–25, a scientist will appear in the bunker with a time machine that looks like a Washing Machine. When he arrives, he will ask you to protect his time machine. If the player agrees, Robots will invade the Bunker, and the player will have to fight them off. The robots will try to destroy the machine as well. If you successfully fend off all of the robots, and save the machine, the Scientist will ask you to give him a battery to fix the time machine. If you don’t give him one, he will leave, and you won’t get the ending. If you give him the battery, one of 2 things can happen:

Either the Future Scientist will attack you, and if you kill him, you will get the Laser Sword, the most powerful weapon in the game, but the Scientist’s body will be on the ground the rest of the game; or The Scientist will repair the time machine, and the game will be complete.

Alien Saviors:

The second ending in the game. To get this ending, you must complete the following steps:

Grab the Radio from the 60-second rush, or from the neighborhood if you could get it at the beginning. Make sure you have at least 2 food; 2 waters; 2 medkits; 2 batteries; and 4 duct tapes. At any point, go on an expedition to the neighborhood, and look for the Radio tower. Once found, climb to the top, and turn on the Radio.

Go back to the bunker and turn on the radio, and wait for a Broadcast that talks about a UFO crash. Expedition to the Crashed UFO Site, and climb on top of the UFO to get a new Radio Event. NOTE: The Radio has to be working in order to get this event, if the radio gets interfered with, you have to destroy the 3 antennas in the Radio Interference Location.

A high-pitched voice will talk on the Radio, saying that the Alien is located in the Neighborhood, where his UFO will be broken, and you need to have 2 Batteries and 4 Duct Tapes. Wait 10 in-game days, and go back to the neighborhood, where the Alien will ask you if you want to join him. If you say yes, you will be taken on another journey, if you say no, he will give you extra max health for the rest of the game. If you choose to go with the Alien, a cutscene of the Military flying in a Helicopter. You will have to defeat 3 waves of Military personnel, each one getting harder and harder. After beating the military, go back to the UFO, and you will complete the game.

Music[edit]

All of the game's original music, excepted for the main Basement theme, which was composed by Roblox user AshTrash[20], was composed and created by YouTube Composer Smuko, who has all of the game's original songs posted on his YouTube channel. He also has the music avalible on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.[21] The other music of the game were Royalty-free songs used with a Creative Commons license.

Reception[edit]

As of March 2024, the game has received 72 Million Visits, and has 74 thousand likes. The game has an estimated 3,000 daily visits. The game has been called one of the best Roblox horror games.[22] The game has gained immense popularity since its release in September 2023. The game is still in Beta, so it isn't finished, and probably won't be finished for a little while. The game is supported in multiple languages, including: English; Spanish; French; German; Portuguese; Italian; Polish; Japanese; Turkish; Russian; Chinese (Traditional); Chinese (Simplified); Korean; and Thai. This gives the game an International audience, with most of Radiant Residents’ players being located in the United States; Latin America; and South Korea. It is UmmmOkayWhat's most successful game besides his only other game Ricky Rat.
