Anna Tcheng(Chinese name 陳潤瓊, in Pinyin: Chen Run-Qiong, 1920-2013), former republic of China diplomat Tcheng Loh (陳籙 Chen Lu)'s third daughter, and wife of film critic and journalist Tang Na (唐納).

Biography[edit]

Anna was born in Beijing in autumn 1920. As her father Tcheng Loh was Republic of China's ambassador in France from 1921 to 1928, Anna spent her childhood in France with the family. [1] [2]

In 1928 Tcheng Loh finished his service in Europe and the family moved back to Shanghai. In 1942 Anna graduated from St. John's University, Shanghai with bachelor degree in English study .[3] Due to her excellence in French and English, she became a reporter for several foreign language newspaper in Shanghai, including French-language newspaper Le Journal de Shanghai(法文上海日報), and English-language newspaper China Daily Tribune (自由論壇報)and The China Press(大陸報) .

In 1946, via introduction by her university classmate and journalist friendMai Shaomei (麥少楣) at a press conference, Anna met with Tang Na, who was the chief editor of the Shanghai Shi Shi Xin Bao(時事新報)at the time, and the two fell in love. [4][5] .

In spring 1948, Anna went to the United States and worked for UNESCO.[6] In December 1948, Tang Na left chief editor position at "Wen Wei Po" in Hong Kong (香港文匯報)and went to New York to re-unite with Anna. The couple moved to Europe in early 1950s. In December 1952, the couple got married in Paris, France. For living the couple ran several Chinese restaurants in Paris, one of them was Le Fontaine de Jade [7] [8][9][10] .

In August 1988, Tang Na passed away in Paris due to lung cancer.[5] In August 1989, on the first anniversary of Tang Na's death, Anna and her daughter came to Shanghai to attend the "Memorial Service for Tang Na" organized by the Shanghai Association of Literary and Art and the Shanghai Veteran Journalists Association.[11] Since 1991, Anna traveled between Paris and Shanghai to compile and publish Tang Na's collected works [8] , and in 1993 "Ma Ji-Liang (Tang Na) Collected Works"(《馬季良(唐納)文集 》)was published in Shanghai.[5] In July 2013, Anna passed away[12] and was buried together with Tang Na in Paris.
