Dr. Antonio Ibarra is a Professor, Researcher and Coordinator of the Health Sciences Research Center, at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Anáhuac University [1]. He earned his Master's and Doctorate in Sciences in Neuroimmunology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Dr. Ibarra's thesis focused on the development of neuroprotective strategies following spinal cord injury.
Dr. Ibarra has studied the beneficial effects induced by protective autoimmunity after spinal cord injury, firstly as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Professor Michal Schwartz at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and later as a scientist of the Health Sciences Research Center (CICSA) of Anáhuac University.[2]
Education
[edit]Dr. José Juan Antonio Ibarra earned his Medical Degree on January 21, 1990, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He obtained his Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences (Immunology) on November 21, 1994, from the Faculty of Medicine at UNAM, graduating with honors. He then completed his Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences (Neuroimmunology) on April 20, 1998, also with honors, from the Faculty of Medicine at UNAM. Additionally, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroimmunology from January 8, 2001, to January 4, 2002, at the Laboratory of Neurobiology, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.[3]
Career and research
[edit]Using spinal cord injury models, Dr. Ibarra has published 70 articles and 12 book chapters in prestigious journals and editorials such as PNAS, Journal of Neurotrauma, and Humana Press. Additionally, he has been a reviewer for several international journals, including Brain, Brain Research, Spinal Cord, Neuropsychobiology, Molecules, BMC Neuroscience, European Journal of Pharmacology, Neuroscience Letters, and Medical Science Monitor.
His research lines encompass topics related to the analysis of the autoimmune response against neural constituents after a central nervous system injury [4]; analysis of the immunological function after a central nervous system injury [5][6] [7]; evaluation of various treatments aimed at promoting neuroprotection and neuroregeneration after a central nervous system injury[8] [9] [10] [11] [12]; analysis of the neuroprotective and regenerative effects of the immune system in a cerebral ischemia model [13]; analysis of the immunomodulatory effect of various drugs used after a central nervous system injury [14] [15] [16] [17]; and Immunonutrition. [18] [19] [20]
Awards, recognitions and memberships
[edit]Dr. Antonio Ibarra's achievements include to be part of Level III in the National System of Researchers. He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience since March 1992 and the Mexican Academy of Sciences, since 2009. He was the winner of the Dr. Jorge Rosenkranz Award 2016 for the study titled "Immunization with modified neural peptides plus scar removal induces a permissive microenvironment and promotes better motor recovery after chronic spinal cord injury" [21], and also the winner of the State Science and Technology Award 2016 in Health Sciences from COMECYT. He receivied the Dr. Everardo Landa Award from the National Academy of Medicine in 2017.
