The Bavarian State Office for non-state Museums (German: Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern), also called Bavarian Museums Service, provides state issued specialist consulting (e.g. on provenance research[1], inclusive exhibition design, digital transformation) and state funding for the more than 1,200 non-state museums in Bavaria.[2] It is organizationally assigned to the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection.[3]

Founded in 1976, the department is responsible for "caring for local museums and similar collections, insofar as they are not administered by the state," as enshrined in the Bavarian Monument Protection Act, Art. 12, Para. 2, No. 7 of 1973. In order to preserve and maintain the cultural heritage in Bavarian museums, the offer of state support for non-state museums was enshrined in law as early as 1908 during the time of the Kingdom of Bavaria.[4] The directory of museums in Bavaria is also maintained by the State Office, between 1991 and 2017 in the form of the handbook Museums in Bavaria with a total of 6 revised editions. The printed handbook was replaced by a digital service in German and English in 2023.[5]

Since 2020, the head of the Landesstelle has been art historian Dirk Blübaum.[6]

The Landesstelle has a national and international network and is a member of the German Museums Association and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Together with the Association of Czech Museums and Galleries, the Association of Upper Austrian Museums and the Saxon State Office for Museums, the state office organizes the annual Conference of Bavarian, Bohemian, Upper Austrian and Saxon Museum Experts (BBOS) to promote exchange on various fields of activity across borders.[7]

Alter Hof in Munich

The Infopoint Museums and Palaces in Bavaria (German: Infopoint Museen und Schlösser in Bayern) at the Alter Hof in Munich ist the public visitor center of the Bavarian State office for non-state Museums.[8] It provides up-to-date information on Bavarian museums, palaces and their exhibitions, and offers advice on planning museum visits for the general public, especially excursionists and tourists.

Below the Infopoint, the exhibition The Imperial Castle in Munich (German: Münchner Kaiserburg) in the historic cellar rooms provides an introduction to the history of the Old Court and the medieval history of Munich under the rule of the Wittelsbach dynasty, in particular under Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV, who resided at the Old Court and is buried at Frauenkirche in Munich.
