The engine variants were widely used in multiple applications ranging from mining to heavy-duty trucks to forestry, marine, heavy equipment, and power generation. It is one of the most widely sold Cat engines with the total amount sold around 575,000.[1]

[edit]The 3406A was the first variant produced by Caterpillar. Starting production in 1973 and ending in 1987. This engine variant was used primarily in heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment and generator applications.
The engine had a displacement of 14.6 litres and produced 310-425 hp and 1090-1460 Ib-ft of torque depending on the application.
3406B
[edit]The 3406B was the updated and improved version of the 3406A, the engine displacement remained at the same at 14.6 litres. But the power output increased to 350-525 hp and 1350-1750 Ib-ft of torque depending on the application. This engine was primarily used in heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment. This engine variant was produced from 1987 to 1991.

This engine variant was a transitory engine from the mechanical 3406B to fully electronic injection 3406E. The engine was a mix of mechanical and electronic fuel injection. This engine variant used Caterpillar's programmable electronic engine control (PEEC).The engine displacement remained the same at 14.6 litres, but the power output increased to 365-625 hp and 1350-2050 Ib-ft of torque depending on the application. It was primarily used in heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment and marine applications. This engine variant was produced from 1991 to 1993.
