Catrin & Abi (Welsh: Catrin ac Abi) is a picture book series following the adventures of the titular children Catrin & Abi. The were created by the Welsh writer, illustrator and filmmaker J.B. Evans in 2023. The series helps children learn British Sign Language BSL and Iaith Arwyddion Cymraeg (IAC) or Welsh Sign Language and were developed to aid children's wider education through sign-supported learning. Abi is a 4-year-old girl who is deaf, presented as having lost her hearing following an illness just before she turned 2 years old, while Catrin is Abi's 9-year-old sister.
History
[edit]The series' first book is My very special dog. Evans created the books with a view to help children learn sign language which could support all children's communication. The method would support all children with or without a verbal/audio communication access need to converse more effectively together, while also creating a sign-supporting learning environment so children could develop their English and Welsh.[1]
Each book has a dedicated sign lesson that is digitally accessed from each book. The lessons cover areas such as the alphabet, numbers, animals, colours, and many more.[2]
The books are used as part of the Abi Project and are the main resource to teach BSL to children who attend mainstream primary school setting[3]
