The Chartered Accountants Benevolent Association (caba) is a benevolent association[1] for Chartered Accountants and their dependents[2]. Benevolent charities are organisations that provide financial and well-being support to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances[3]
History
[edit]Originally founded in 1886 [4] to 'provide for the relief of necessitous persons who are or have been members of either ICAEW or the former Society of Incorporated Accountants and their dependents[5]. It was based at Moorgate Place (1886-1965), City House, 56-66 Goswell Road (1965-c.1982) and 301 Salisbury House, London Wall (c.1982-2001). In 2001 it moved to 3 Cottesbrooke Park, Heartlands, Daventry, before a move to Rugby and its current home at Merrett House, Rugby[6]
Governance
[edit]caba is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity, monitored by the Charity Commission to ensure that aims are charitable and funds used for the benefit of its members and communities in which they are active. caba follows the Charity Commission's Charity Governance Code as a tool for continuous improvement.
The governing instrument is the Memorandum and Articles of the Association[7]
Committees
[edit]caba operates four committees[8], with volunteer input, to oversee the activities of the association:
- Finance, Audit and Risk Committee
- Support Users, Service and Engagement Committee
- Investment Committee
- People, Culture and Governance Commitee
Operations
[edit]caba supports financial health for beneficiaries through financial grants, energy cost payments, debt advice and essential living expenses[9]. caba supports the mental and pshycial health of its beneficiaries, also offering career advice, legal advice and a training programme [10]
caba often produces whitepapers on issues impacting on accountants, including stress and burnout[11][12] and addiction[13]
In 2022 caba spent £5m on charitable activities[14][15]
