The Detonics 6x9 Grim is a six-barreled pistol with a DAO (double-action only) single-trigger mechanism and automatic sequential selection of six fuzes. It is produced in the Czech Republic by UNRRA Group s.r.o. using CNC machining. The Detonics 6x9 Grim is to some extent a combination of the features of a revolver and a self-loading pistol. From the revolver, it was inspired by the principle of rotation during the selection of fuses and the storage of each cartridge in its cartridge chamber. That of self-loading pistols was inspired by ergonomics and a flat design suitable for concealed carry. The goal of the design was the maximum degree of reliability, durability, the possibility of safe wearing and simple operation. The mechanism of the pistol is completely unique and at this moment there is no known similar system that would be used in the past or present in pistols of other brands.

To use it, you only need to load the barrel of the pistol and then just press the trigger six times. No further action is required, everything happens automatically in the mechanism and it is controlled to use the trigger.

Pistol designer

[edit]

Michael Baloun - former fighter pilot and key designer of UNRRA Group s.r.o.

The history of the creation of the pistol

[edit]

In the first half of 2021, UNRRA Group s.r.o. the decision to create a new model line of pistols. The goal was the creation of a multi-shot weapon in the category that can be sold freely in the Czech Republic, i.e. for cartridges of the Flobert type. The weapon was also to be prepared for the later use of more powerful calibers. The owner of the company was inspired by historical weapons, the so-called pepper guns, which use a separate barrel for each charge. After a technical survey, during which he came to the conclusion that he was able to fit six barrels into the format of a modern compact pistol, he commissioned the design of the weapon to the then company designer. But he did not manage his task and the design of the weapon ended up in a drawer for a long time. The situation only changed in the first half of 2022, when a promising new designer, Michael Baloun, joined the company. Based on the technical requirements, he completely revised the design of the weapon and successfully completed it in a record short time. Life tests and preparation for serial production were completed in May 2023 and the weapon was handed over for serial production. Commercial sales of the weapon began in September 2023.

Model series

[edit]
  • 6X9 prototype - test verification series (January 2023)
  • 69S and 69L – first production series, equipped with short "S" or long "L" barrel (from June 2023)
  • 69L Bronze Age - limited edition gun with a bronze alloy frame (June 2024)
  • 69SC - a sub-compact version of the weapon with a reduced frame and a shortened barrel length of 72 mm (from August 2024)

Description of the trigger mechanism

[edit]

After pressing the trigger, the central hammer is tensioned via the auxiliary levers and the fall safety is unlocked at the same time. During cocking of the hammer, the integrated programmer is set/turned, which directs the firing pin to the primer of one of the six cartridges. At the end of the trigger travel, the hammer slips out of the auxiliary lever and strikes the fuse with the impact surface, which activates the incendiary component of the cartridge with the blow and a shot is fired from one of the barrels.

After releasing the trigger and pressing it again, the whole process is repeated, during which the programmer directs the firing pin to the next charge. The fall safety / hammer lock is active again immediately after firing the cartridge. Charges are fired in the gun sequentially, clockwise.

Interesting fact about pistol

[edit]

The trigger system of the weapon and the solution of placing six barrels in the shape of a rectangle is unique and has never been used in another weapon

The cartridge of the 9 mm Flobert à balle used is very hard and it is difficult to fire it. Therefore, it is practically not used for weapons with a DAO trigger mechanism (pulled before firing by the shooter's index finger) and pistols in general. For designers, it is a real challenge to force a weapon in this caliber to fire a cartridge reliably and achieve a tolerable trigger resistance.

The frame of the weapon - consists of two vertically divided duralumin halves / shells, in which the complete mechanism of the weapon is stored. These halves are milled from duralumin alloy and fitted with steel pins and bolted together. This solution is unique in the field of weapons, and a similar solution, outside of this manufacturer, can only be found in the weapons of the American company Kel-Tec, where the frame parts are made of plastic.

The meaning and uniqueness of the pistol

[edit]

The Detonics 6X9 Grim six-barrel pistol is unique in the world due to its unusual design and specific technological and constructional solution, and it is characterized by these unique features that are not currently used in any other weapons:

1. Six barrels - The gun has six barrels, which are arranged in two vertical rows of three barrels. Each barrel is loaded with one cartridge before use and therefore fires one shot. This design is unusual because the vast majority of handguns have only one barrel that is sequentially self-loading by a magazine or rotary cylinder mechanism.

2. Unique trigger mechanism - The gun fires sequentially from each barrel, meaning the user can fire six quick shots without the need for reloading by simply pulling the trigger. No further manipulation by the shooter is required.

3. Compact design - Despite the need to fit six barrels in the gun, the Detonics 6X9 Grim pistol is very compact, comparable to conventional self-loading pistols, making it suitable for concealed carry.

4. Immunity against external influences - The gun was designed for concealed carry and contact self-defense, when maximum reliability and insensitivity to external influences is required, incl. pressures and grips of the aggressor. The design of the pistol, without external control and moving elements, completely excludes the possibility of disabling or blocking the weapon by any movement, grip or pressure.

Cons of the pistol

[edit]
  • The gun is six-barreled, firing one round from each barrel. This brings a functional limitation, when the pistol fires only six rounds per charge, whereas a regular self-loading pistol, supplied from a magazine, allows, according to the design, to fire significantly more rounds per charge with the possibility of relatively fast reloading.
  • The barrel itself is relatively massive and is made of a monoblock of steel, which entails both a higher production price, a higher complexity of production, and a higher weight of the entire weapon. Therefore, this design is limited to compact pistols where the increase in weight of a short barrel is still acceptable.
  • The 9mm Flobert cartridge used is quite weak. Its energy reaches approximately 150 Joules, which is quite limiting for the purposes of active self-defense.
