GlobalPlatform (formerly Visa OpenPlatform) is a nonprofit organization that develops and promotes standards for secure digital services, focusing on the interoperability, management, and security of embedded hardware technologies.[1][2] The GlobalPlatform specifications are considered the de facto standard for remote secure download and management of smart card applications.[3]

History

[edit]

Visa Inc. introduced the Visa OpenPlatform smart card specification in April 1998 to support the development of multi-application smart cards based on Java Card technology.[4] In 1999, Visa opened up the specifications to other vendors via the OpenPlatform Consortium.
