Grendel Games is a Dutch video game developer studio, founded in 2005. Grendel Games makes scientifically validated serious games for training purposes, awareness and behavioural change.

Video Games

[edit]

Known video games of Grendel are:

Underground

[edit]

In 2014, the University Medical Center of Groningen and De Friesland Health Insurance entered into a partnership with the company to develop and apply Underground for training surgeons in their laparoscopic skills [1]. Underground received a lot of attention from the national and international press because of the specially developed controller. The regular Wii Remotes can be placed in a holder, allowing the game to emulate the use of laparoscopic instruments, thus replacing the use of laparoscopic instruments.

Garfield's Count Me In

[edit]

Garfield's Count Me In is a game that was developed for children in (special) primary education to practice their math skills. In 2018, Grendel Games won the silver International Serious Play Award for Garfield's Count Me In. It has been scientifically validated that it leads to a better fact retrieval amongst children that played the game.[2]

Water Battle

[edit]

Water Battle was developed in collaboration with water company Vitens. Players of this game gain insight into their energy and water consumption and how to use it more sustainably. In 2015, Water Battle received a special mention among the nominees for the Aquatech Innovation Award. On September 27, 2016, Grendel Games received the national award for Best Serious Game for Water Battle.

Gryphon Rider

[edit]

Gryphon Rider is a serious game that allows young clients who are rehabilitating after an acquired brain injury to do balance exercises. Gryphon Rider won the award for Best Applied Game Design at the Dutch Game Awards 2015.

Distress!

[edit]

Distress! was developed in collaboration with the University of Baltimore. It is a narrative simulation of a patient in respiratory distress. The game trains nurses to recognize subtle signs of breathing problems and to act appropriately. It's up to the player to make the right decisions in this scenario, based on true events. Distress! won a gold International Serious Play Award in 2021.
