Kip Allen Frey (born January 6, 1959) is an American venture capitalist, attorney, and academic. He is notable for his tenure as Executive Vice President of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1992.

Early life and education

[edit]

Frey was born in Bucyrus, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from the University of Southern California in 1981, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He subsequently obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Duke University School of Law in 1985 and served on the Duke Law Journal during his time there.[1]

[edit]

After completing his legal education, Frey practiced intellectual property law. In 1990, he joined Turner Broadcasting System, where he was involved in a variety of projects, including the acquisition of Castle Rock Entertainment, the creation of the Cartoon Network, and the construction of the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.[2]

Business career

[edit]

World Championship Wrestling (1992)

[edit]

In early 1992, Frey was appointed Executive Vice President of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), succeeding Jim Herd. Despite lacking a background in professional wrestling, Frey implemented several initiatives aimed at enhancing the organisation’s performance and morale. Notably, he introduced "workrate bonuses," which saw monetary benefits being given to wrestlers who delivered exceptional performances, which incentivised higher-quality matches. Frey's tenure was brief, lasting only a few months before he was eventually replaced by Bill Watts in mid-1992.[3]

Entrepreneurial ventures

[edit]

Following his departure from WCW, Frey transitioned into entrepreneurship and venture capital. Throughout the 1990s, he led several startup companies, including Ventana Communications Group, Accipiter, and OpenSite Communications. In 2001, he joined Intersouth Partners, a venture capital firm in the Southeastern United States.[2] He would also join The Heritage Group as Executive Vice President of New Ventures. [4]

In 2013, Frey became President and CEO of Dognition, a technology company focused on canine cognition. [2]

Academic career

[edit]

Since 1996, Frey has served as a professor at Duke University, teaching courses on intellectual property policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy. He has held positions on various university boards and has been involved with multiple non-profit and charitable organisations. [2]
