Assassination attempts and plots targeting prime ministers of Japan have occurred throughout the country's history, with incidents ranging from the pre-war era to modern times.

Four sitting prime ministers have been killed: Itō Hirobumi (1909, by An Jung-geun), Hara Takashi (1921, by Nakaoka Kon'ichi), Hamaguchi Osachi (1931, by Oseya Tomeo), and Inukai Tsuyoshi (1932, by eleven Imperial Japanese Navy officers). Additionally, three former prime ministers were killed after their premiership: Takahashi Korekiyo (prime minister from 1921–1922) and Saitō Makoto (prime minister from 1932–1934), who were both assassinated during the February 26 incident in 1936 by members of the Imperial Way Faction and Shinzo Abe (prime minister from 2006–2007, 2012–2020) who was assassinated in 2022 by Tetsuya Yamagami.

Six sitting and former prime ministers have survived attempted assassinations with varying levels of injury: Keisuke Okada (1936), Hiranuma Kiichirō (1941), Nobusuke Kishi (1960), Takeo Miki (1975), Morihiro Hosokawa (1994), and Fumio Kishida (2023).
