MAKHNO Studio is a Ukrainian design studio that specializes in architecture, interior design, and ceramics. The studio is recognized for integrating Ukrainian cultural elements into modern design practices.[1][2][3]

Overview

The studio's work includes 600 unique projects both commercial and residential, and it is operational in 25 countries worldwide.[4]

The studio's work prominently features a strong artistic component, often considered full-fledged art objects, seamlessly integrating into contemporary contexts.[5][6][7]

MAKHNO Studio operates a ceramic workshop where artisans from artistic and craft dynasties employ authentic handcraft techniques along with their proprietary know-how, producing unique art pieces that contribute to the studio's distinct identity.[8]

The studio adheres to the use of natural, environmentally friendly materials and combines modern design techniques with traditional Ukrainian crafting methods.

History

The studio was founded by architect and designer Serhii Makhno in 2003 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

  • 2004: First design project realized, a restaurant in Kyiv
  • 2005: First author-designed item
  • 2009: First victories: studio topped the list of nominations at the 5th International Exhibition Décor 2009
  • 2012: First architectural project created: Jack's House,[9] Kyiv region, Ukraine
  • 2011: First international publication on Dezeen[10]
  • 2013: "Life of Ideas": book, film, and large-scale exhibition for the studio's 10th anniversary[11]
  • 2014: 1st place at "Interior of the Year 2014" for the realization of the project of its own office[12]
  • 2015: Launched MAKHNO Product[13] , and developed the first international project of a private house in Portugal
  • 2016: Opened its own object design gallery Makhno Gallery, Kyiv, Ukraine[14]
  • 2017: Most prestigious global awards: Best of the Best "Red Dot Design Award", Best Interior Design Apartment "International Property Awards", finalists "SBID"
  • 2018: Realized the project of the largest Japanese cuisine restaurant in Europe and educational institution DTEK Academy[15]
  • 2019: Central stand at the world's largest object design exhibition - iSaloni.Salone del Mobile.Milano.Euroluce[16] in Milan, Italy, where art sculptures DIDO were first presented[17]
  • 2020: Founded MAKHNO Foundation[18]
  • 2021: Numerous company offices opened in the USA, Germany, Japan.
  • 2023: The studio's updated website recognized as "site of the day worldwide" by the jury of Awwwards and CSS Design Awards,[19] personal exhibition ZEMLYA at Les Ateliers Courbet gallery, New York.[20][21][22]

Awards and recognition

To date, the studio has received approximately 80 international awards, and has been featured in over 1000 publications across respected industry outlets.

Among its recognitions, the studio has received the Red Dot Design Award's "Best of the Best",[23] IDA Awards, ArchDaily, Designboom, Dezeen, ELLE Decoration, and Architectural Digest. The studio is also listed in the Ukrainian Forbes.[24]

Exhibitions

MAKHNO Studio has participated in Ukrainian and international exhibitions and has held personal exhibitions in major contemporary design galleries worldwide.[25]

The studio's significant presence was felt at events such as the iSaloni.Salone del Mobile.Milano, where they first presented the art sculptures DIDO.[26][27]

In November 2023, MAKHNO Studio hosted a personal exhibition of Serhii Makhno's lighting and furniture collection "ZEMLYA" at Les Ateliers Courbet gallery in New York.[28]

Social responsibility

MAKHNO Studio participates in community and charity activities.

In 2023, the studio introduced a shelter stop project designed to protect against shelling and debris during missile strikes and developed a project for the Museum of Ukrainian Contemporary Art and Ceramics.[29][30][31]

The studio also engages in charitable activities, including the Dido Christmas campaign, which supports "Dacha," a home for critically ill children run by the charity foundation "Zaporuka."[32][33][34]

MAKHNO Studio is a member of The Society of British and International Interior Design and is listed in Ukrainian Forbes, acknowledging its influence and stature in the global design landscape.[35][36][37]
