History

[edit]

The reference to agriculture in the State offices is found in 1854 with the Secretary of State for the Interior, Police and Agriculture (current Ministry of the Interior and Police). It will be in 1908, with the promulgation of a new Constitution, when we will see an institution specialized in these issues when the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Immigration is created. Schoenrich in Santo Domingo, a country with a future explains that the constant revolutions limited the action of this organization and that therefore its action had been limited to "a general supervision of agriculture, the preparatory work for the establishment of an experimental agricultural station and the operation of a small meteorological service".[3]

Throughout its history it will adopt several names: Agriculture and Commerce between 1929-1934; Agriculture, Industry and Commerce in 1934; Labor, Agriculture, Industry and Commerce between 1934-1935; etc. In 1963 it would finally be established as the Secretary of State for Agriculture. In 2010, it became the Ministry of Agriculture with Decree no. 56-105 that modified the nomenclature of government institutions.
