The Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage is a museum located in Edinburgh City Centre that tells the story of Scottish firefighting from its inception to present day. The museum houses antique fire appliances, uniforms and operational equipment. It is run by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and rated 5-Star by VisitScotland.[1]
Overview
[edit]The museum is compact and split into five main themes, covering fire service history and how firefighting is evolving to improve its service to the public. Throughout the museum there are a range of digital interactives to delve deeper into the topics and activities for families including dressing up for children.
History
[edit]The collection of was previous held an displayed at The Museum of Fire in Lauriston Place in Edinburgh. The new museum, which incorporates the history of all Scottish firefighting, was opened in 2023 and is located at McDonald Road Community Fire Station.
Themes

Early Days - the origin story of the Fire Service, including the role of Fire Insurance Companies [2], the rise of James Braidwood and the impact Great Fire of Edinburgh had in shaping firefighting as we know it.
On the Run - how to get to a fire quickly and handle it safely.
Being a Firefighter - recruitment, the training experience and the unique roles played by canine crews.
Your Safety - how the fire service has used comic strips, posters, radio and more to capture the public’s attention and spread the word.
Temporary Exhibition - The role World War I and World War II had on the formation of Fire Brigades.
