The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), founded in 1898 as the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD), represents the interests of nearly 19,400 pharmacies that employ 215,000 individuals across the United States..[1]. NCPA provides continuing education and advocates for independent pharmacy owners and their patients.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

NCPA also conducts surveys among independent pharmacy owners on topics such as drug shortages[8], staffing issues[9], and industry oversight[10]

B. Douglas Hoey is a pharmacist and CEO of NCPA.[11]

In 2022, Hoey was named to the Board of Governors of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board .[12]

NCPA is located in Alexandria Virginia and has approximately 50 employees.[13]

History

NCPA was founded in 1898 as the National Association of Retail Druggists. NARD changed its name to the National Community Pharmacists Association to better reflect the expanded role and offerings of pharmacies beyond dispensing medication and drugs.[14]

Organization

NCPA has a membership of nearly 19,400 pharmacies across the country. NCPA members adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct designed to demonstrate commitment to upholding the highest standards in professional practice and dedication. [14]

Structure

NCPA operates under the governance of a board of directors and maintains a staff of over 50 employees. While NCPA serves as a national organization, its reach is extended through its state and regional organizations that represent pharmacists. The chapters span across the United State, which offer programming and direct services to support their members at various stages of their professional careers.[15]
