Neolema ogloblini, commonly known as the Tradescantia leaf beetle, is a small beetle about 5mm long with a dark, iridescent, metallic bronze colour.
Origin
[edit]Originating from regions in south-eastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina, this beetle is specialized to feed on Tradescantia fluminensis. In an effort to control the invasive Tradescantia fluminensis in New Zealand, Neolema ogloblini was introduced by Landcare Research and released in 2011 as a biological control agent, particularly in areas free from frost. Life cycle
[edit]The beetle’s lifecycle is closely tied to the Tradescantia plant, with adults feeding on the leaves and larvae beginning their life cycle by consuming the foliage upon hatching.[2]
