Primary is a studio and gallery complex located in Nottingham, United Kingdom. It has become a prominent center for contemporary art and cultural activities in the region.

Primary is a registered charity under English law.[1]

Primary is in the Arts Council England National Portfolio since 2018[2]

History[edit]

Artists from Nottingham worked with Arts Council England and Nottingham City Council to secure a permanent space for artists in the city. In 2012 most artist's studios were on short and temporary contract. Primary was eventually founded in 2012 by a group of Nottingham Artists, including Niki Russell and Michael Forbes. It was created with the vision of providing a dedicated studio spaces for artists. Primary recieved support from Southern Water [3] to "The funding will go towards the creation of a publicly accessible, multi-use community outdoor area"

Primary is situated in a Grade II[4]former school building. Douglas Primary School also known as Ilkeston Road Board School designed by Abraham Harrison Goodall (1847-1912) [5]

Primary offers a range of facilities and services, including:

Exhibitions and events[edit]

Primary hosts contemporary art exhibitions, music and performance events, and inclusive cultural programs. These events showcase the work of both emerging and established artists and aim to foster a vibrant and inclusive arts community in Nottingham. It also provides space for smaller galleries, TG and 4/4 and previously Trade (Gallery).
