Rumen Tassev (born December 5, 2002), known professionaly as Rarin, is a 19 year old singer, songwriter, producer and rapper. Rarin started getting into music during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic [1]. He released two extended plays and an album througout his musical career. His debut EP being "Phases" on January 18, 2020. On June 5, 2020 he released his second EP "Love Rules All". Most notably, his debut album, which released on June 25, 2021 "Toxic Ends" which blew up as Rarin had already established a name for himself by then throughout the Fortnite community. He is currently signed with Black 17 Media, being one of their most succesful projects, getting almost 200 million streams on all music-streaming platforms.

Early life and career

[edit]

Rarin was born on December 5, 2002. He was born to Bulgarian parents, making him able to speak both Bulgarian and English. During his childhood, his parents made him experience activities such as fencing, swimming, competetitive chess and drawing. His parents also enrolled him in piano classes during kindergarten in which he played classical music for over eight years. After getting into EDM music for a short period, he discovered rap in middle school. He later began rapping in his sophomore year.[2]

He debutted with his single "Let it Go" on January 15, 2020. He later released several songs which developed him an audience. However, that would all change when he released his first hit song, GTA which eventually got famous throughout the community of the viral videogame, Fortnite, through content creators creating montages containing video clips from the videogame whilst his song is played. This lead to him building a name in the Fortnite community, leading to him releasing other hit songs such as YESSIR!, Decals, Toxic Ends and Switching Sides, each getting over 5 million streams on Spotify.

Musical Style

[edit]

Rarin has a different approach towards his music compared to other hip-hop artists, with a more melodic approach towards his music making his music a mix of both pop and hip-hop. For his lyrics, Rarin has stated that he "strives to tell a story that his fans would find relatable and inspiring," in order to build a strong connection with his audience.[3]

Record Label

[edit]

Rarin is currently signed to Black 17 Media, a small record label found by Jake Houstle. However, Rarin has a different take towards bigger record labels. When talking about what makes the music industry hard for him and others like him that blew up through Fortnite, he says "What made it harder is these major labels coming in, they sweep the floor, buy out everyone, raise the prices, cut out a lot of independent artists. Now that everyone’s marketing, it’s oversaturated.”[4]

Rarin has stated previously that he wants to make his own record label in his #FaZe1 submission, a competition that the winner of gets a million dollars and a chance to join the team. When asked what he'd do with the million dollars, he said that "I would also want to start a record label. This is been my dream for a while now, I'm getting closer and closer to it every day."
