Richard Thomas Charbonneau (born July 21, 1942, San Francisco, California) is an American race car driver. He is known for winning the 1969 and 1970 NHRA world points championships[1] and the 1970 Stock Eliminator World Championship title earning him a seat on the Car Craft Magazine 1970 All-Star Drag Racing Team as Stock Eliminator Driver of the Year.[2] In addition to these accolades, Charbonneau has won Class Championships at the Winternationals, Springnationals, U.S. Nationals and set numerous NHRA national records during that time.[3] During a ceremony in 2009, Charbonneau was inducted into the Taylor-Vertex High & Mighty Hall of Fame at Bandimere Speedway honoring his contributions to the sport of NHRA drag racing within Division 5.[4] Charbonneau achieved his most notable drag racing success driving his psychedelically hued 1967 Ford Fairlane 427 E/Stocker known as "Trip-1."[2] In 2020 Charbonneau and "Trip-1" returned to Pomona to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his Stock Eliminator victory and participate in the race day parade, after which the car was displayed in the Wally Parks-NHRA Motorsports Museum.[2]
