Shaheed Minar, Silchar is a monument built in memory of the martyrs of the 1961 Assam Language Movement. It is located in Gandhibagh, Silchar, in the state of Assam, India, and every year on May 19, homage is paid here to the martyrs of the language movement.

History

On May 19, 1961, during the agitation demanding the inclusion of Bengali as one of the state languages of Assam, 11 Bengalis were martyred by gunfire from paramilitary forces in the Silchar railway station area. In their memory, this Central Shaheed Minar was established in Gandhibagh, Silchar.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

Usage

Every year on May 19 at 2:35 PM, the residents of Silchar pay tribute at this Shaheed Minar, remembering the barbaric incident of 1961. The Chief Minister of Assam or their representative also offers respect at the Shaheed Minar annually.^[1]
