Sister Act 3 is an upcoming American comedy film directed by Tim Federle from a screenplay by Madhuri Shekar. It is a sequel to Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) and the third film in the Sister Act franchise. It stars Whoopi Goldberg and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
The film is scheduled to be released on Disney+.
Cast[edit]
- Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier
- Sheryl Lee Ralph as Florence Watson
Production[edit]
On June 3, 2015, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures had hired Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah to write a screenplay for a remake of 1992's Sister Act with Allison Shearmur set to serve as a producer.[1] The remake was ultimately unproduced, however.
On August 19, 2017, Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg expressed interest in directing a potential third installment of the franchise.[2] On December 7, 2018, it was announced that Disney had redeveloped the production into a sequel to Sister Act and Sister Act 2 and that they had hired screenwriters Regina Hicks and Karin Gist to write the film's screenplay. Additionally, the film was now expected to be distributed via their streaming service Disney+.[3]
The film was confirmed on December 10, 2020 at Disney Investor Day with Goldberg reprising her role as Deloris and Tyler Perry producing.[4] On September 30, 2021, Madhuri Shekar joined as writer, with Tim Federle set to direct; he was hired due to his work on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and the strong response between executives towards his then-upcoming Disney+ film Better Nate Than Ever.[5] On November 3, 2021, Perry confirmed that work on the screenplay had already began.[6]
In February 2024, it was revealed that Sheryl Lee Ralph would reprise her role as Florence Watson in the film.[7]
Filming[edit]
