Sofía Valdés (born December 12, 1999) is a singer-songwriter born in Panama.[1] Dubbed as "Panama's New Princess of Dream Pop", Valdés is known for experimenting with a blend of multiple genre's such as bossa nova, folk and primarily alternative pop. Her musical prowess is due to her multicultural musical background.[2]

Early life[edit]

She was born and raised in Panama, in 1999. She was uninterested in her academic studies due to her ADHD and dyslexia but had a passion for music from a very young age.[3] At age 8, she had learned how to play the guitar and by the age of 13, she began songwriting.[4][5] Her musical interests stem from the fact that her great-grandfather was the renowned Cuban singer Miguelito Valdés and her great-great-grandmother was the famous Panamanian singer Silvia De Grasse.[6][5] They also come from her fathers interest in classic popular artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Norah Jones.[7] Much of these influences as well as her appreciation for classical latino music from Brazil and Cuba.

In her freshmen year of high school, Valdés studied at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, United States to improve her English and learn how to improve her songwriting abilities.[7] She then moved to London at age 18 after being accepted at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. She had her first live performance at Lollapalooza’s Tito’s Handmade Vodka Stage, which led to her being discovered by a music producer and signed to Warner Records.[8]

Career[edit]

Upon signing with her record label, Sofía debuted with her song "Little Did I Know", in September 2020, which was then followed by "Handful of Water".[9] Both of these songs were featured in her first EP "Ventura" (translates to "Adventure" in Spanish), which was released in 2021. Most of these songs were written during her time at the Institute in London, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Valdés moved back to her hometown of Panama City and finished her EP during her time back. The EP is centered on her struggles with her identity as well as her connection to her cultural background. Although "Ventura" mostly consists of English songs, there is a rich blend of Spanish and Latin genres within the EP.[10]

In 2022, Sofia released her second EP "In Bloom". This EP features songs that address Sofía's journey with self-discovery. She uses similar themes in this EP as compared to "Ventura", however, it mostly address her perspective on maturing and growing up. This was followed by her release of her third EP titled "Silvia" in 2023, named after her late great-great grandmother. In this EP, she tells the story to pay homage to her late grandmother and uses a rich blend of classical Cuban and Panamanian music as a highlight in the album.[11]
