Upol Amin (born 24 March in Prairiewood, New South Wales) is the first Australian Born Bangladeshi criminal defence lawyer in Australia. He is the most prominent lawyer amongst the Bengali community in Australia.
Life

[edit]Upol Amin was born and raised in Sydney Australia.
He is the eldest of his parents’ two children.
Upol Amin’s parents, Boni Amin and Veronica Amin, migrated to Australia from Bangladesh. Both of his parents hail from Chittagong, Bangladesh. His father belonged to a Muslim family from Hatiya, an island on the Bay of Bengal, in Noakhali district. His mother belonged to a Roman Catholic family originally from Barisal.
Upol Amin grew up in Lakemba, New South Wales.
He attended Haberfield Public School. He completed his secondary education at Concord High School and he then completed his law degree at Macquarie University.
Career
[edit]Upol Amin has represented many people charged with a range of serious criminal offences, such as murder, kidnapping and drug smuggling.
Many matters that Upol Amin has dealt with have gained media attention.
Upol Amin represented Shahab Ahmed,[1] the first Bangladeshi man to be charged with murder in Australia.[2]
Upol Amin became well-known amongst the Bengali diaspora around the world as Bangladesh Megastar Shakib Khan’s Australian lawyer. Shakib Khan was accused of raping a female co-producer during a film shoot in Sydney in 2016. Shakib Khan was released without charge for this matter. It was presented to the Film Producers and Distributors Association, Film Directors Association[3] by those in favour of the co-producer that Shakib Khan had escaped prosecution from Australia and questions were raised about future offers for films given the nature of the allegation against him.
Upol Amin cleared the controversy surrounding this matter in a video statement which was shared by various media outlets. Upol Amin confirmed that Shakib Khan was never charged or convicted after an investigation into the matter was undertaken by New South Wales Police. He dismissed the rumour that Shakib Khan fled Australia during an active arrest warrant.[4] St George Detectives Branch had confirmed all of this with Upol Amin. This clarification by Upol Amin to the public gave rise to defamation proceedings pursued by Shakib Khan against those who gave the false information to media outlets.
Upol Amin also represented Shakhawat Hossain Bokul, a prominent Bangladesh National Party politician and the former member of Parliament of Narsingdi-4. Bokul was charged with an offence during his visit to Sydney, Australia in 2022. The Court dismissed the case against Bokul.
Upol Amin has represented many other notable Australian Bangladeshis. He is also the preferred lawyer amongst the Aristocratic society of Bangladesh, as he represented the sons and daughters of various Bangladeshi business tycoons, politicians, Judges and Magistrates who have migrated to Australia.
Many regard Upol Amin as the Godfather of the Bengalis in Sydney, as he is a voice the Bengali immigrants in Sydney have longed for and he has saved many from injustice.
As a sign of recognition for his work for the community, locals have a billboard of Upol Amin in the heart of Lakemba.
Personal Life
[edit]Upol Amin’s father is Boni Amin, who is a popular travel vlogger and social media content creator.
Upol Amin is married to Songita Rahaman.
He is occasionally seen to walk the streets of Lakemba around the Bangladeshi shops and restaurants.
He has extensive family in Australia, some members of which have migrated to Australia as early as the 1970’s. He has very limited family remaining in Bangladesh.
The last time Upol Amin visited Bangladesh was in 2012.
