"Valse" (Russian: Вальс) is a piano composition by Russian composer and pianist Evgeny Grinko.

Initially starting as a noise rock artist playing drums and guitar, Evgeny Grinko began teaching himself the piano in 2007. Three years later, while improvising on a summer evening, he came up with the first part of 'Valse'. Finding it very different from his other works, he recorded himself playing the track. Six months later, he completed the composition and uploaded it to Facebook.[2]

Shortly after, Grinko recorded the music video for the composition. Set in an open field at sunset, the video features him playing the piece on an upright piano while skillfully smoking a cigarette that remains in his mouth. Birds can be heard chirping in the background. As the video progresses, an accordion joins the piano. The video concludes with reversed footage of Grinko walking to the piano and lighting a cigarette.

The music video was uploaded to YouTube on December 17, 2010[3],and within two years, it went viral in Turkey, with views from the country surpassing one million. In response to this success, Grinko held his first concert in Istanbul with the help of his Turkish manager. He performed the track four times and received tremendous support from the audience. “The venue was sold out. All based on that YouTube video." Grinko recalls in his biography. "And instead of being disappointed, the crowd wanted even more! I was so surprised, but the song quickly became a viral hit.”[2]

The composition later appeared as the second track on Grinko's third album, Ice for Aureliano Buendia, released in 2014.

As of October 2024, the video has 51 million views and 551 thousand likes on YouTube, making it the most viewed video on his channel. It is also Grinko's most-streamed track on Spotify, with 71 million streams.[4] [3]

Use in other media

[edit]

Turkish pop artist Mabel Matiz wrote a track with the same name in Turkish, 'Vals.' He used the original composition as an instrumental base and added his own lyrics for his 2015 album Gök Nerede.[5] The track was also featured in the 10th episode of the Turkish TV series Brave and Beautiful.
