Rear-Admiral Walter Evershed CB DSO (1907-1969) was an officer in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1960. He joined Royal Naval College Dartmouth at 14. Following graduation he entered service in 1921 and by the outbreak of the Second World War he was the Lieutenant Commander of HMS Wivern. In the following years, he changed ship twice before an injury in early 1941 forced him to return home. Following the war he was Director of Naval Operations and Trade and in 1957 he took command of HM Dockyard in Rosyth, Scotland.

Walter Evershed was born on 19 April 1907, in Handsworth, Birmingham, England as the third child of Edward Evershed and Lillian Johnstone. His eldest brother Edward, was born in 1902 followed by Stanley in 1904. Shortly before the birth of his sister Lilian, in 1911, Edward died aged 8.

At 14 he entered the Royal Navy and was educated at both Brittania Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and Royal Naval College, Osborn.
